I have a heap of RC cars. The lower shelf, and the two Grave Diggers are for my daughter. The rest are brushless. The Losi drift car is fun in a big, smooth driveway, or even in the house, terrorizing the pets. The extended chassis Savage is a 6S monster, and nearly impossible to drive anywhere but on the dirt. The 8.2E is the most fun on a BMX track, and the two RC10s are fun indoors only.
(I'm going somewhere with this)
The Rustler is the best go-to car. I can run it on 3S, and get stupid speeds, or I can put a NiMh in it, and put it in training mode, so my daughter can drive it. It can go 70 MPH, or be limited to around 15 MPH. Or, of course, anywhere in between, depending on battery size, battery type, and ESC setting.
It's a good car for a beginner, or advanced. It's also my only car that I can jump into the pool, and drive around the bottom. Though, I wouldn't recommend doing that often.
