Just got mine in the mail. The threads seems really grainy when screwing on the lid but everything else seems good.
That's very typical for titanium. Same thing with flashlights. Difficult to machine smooth threads.
Its actually a mixture of things, mostly in part due to the mixture of "herbs and spices" in the titanium. It is a general characteristic of both Vargo and other brands like GSI.
I took a dremel to mine. Brush removed coating and then polished with Dremel wheel. Not perfect but improved. Just the threads
I rub a little coconut oil on mine. Eases the threads a little and also helps creates a good seal.
That food grade silicone?
Indeed! Got to off of Amazon for my kitchen faucet cartridge. Before silicone grease however, I would spend sometime (preferably alone ; ), screwing and unscrewing it, as it will breaking in faster without the lubricant. I say alone, because if yours is like mine, it can be pretty noisy. Good luck!
