Help I'm a newbie!

more_vert
Hiya everyone, Just starting to get a little bit more serious with audio now in terms of headphones which unlike speakers I know next to nothing about. Just need some help with a good pair of headphones for movies and music. I would also like a dac/amp for the headphones to go alongside my pc and music player so I would need USB or optical compatibility for my pc and of course rac support for my music player 👍 Budget around £500/$650 for everything Thanks for any help you can give

I like the Drop Meze 99 Noir for "Theatre" listening. Very nice low ends, more so than the 6xx, and soooo comfy on the head. You can prolly binge a couple three episodes of [your fav TV series here] before you realize they're on your head. That's my case anyway, YMMV. As to amps for cans, some really don't need them but might benifit from them. I think any can rated at 200 ohms and up needs an amp. Many options out there in sub $150 range so trying a couple won't kill you over time. Read the reviews. Jump in. Rinse Repeat.

Jaxtrauma recommendation is good start schiit magni/modi is great combo in it's current versions and 6XX is solid headphone all around listening. My setup is the o2/grace dac with 789 amp with the 6xxs. I also have Moondrop Aria iems. My only caveat to 6xx is for movies the imaging is great giving yo a surround sound like quality with very intimate in your head sound that demands your undivided attention however scope and impact may seem small and light. The scope of sound is small because does not place sound with any distance but beyond your head and the impact of the sound is light do to the bass not being slow sustained body of weight in the bass. The 6xx has bass but is crisp fast, and thin but still presents movies very well but comes down to preference. I don't see anyone overtly against watching movies or play games with the 6xxs. I quite enjoy watching movies with 6xx but I do have iem's with better sound stage plus has bass with slam that only adds to the enjoyment to movies.

I have limited experience with more bass oriented audio. My experience for headphones/headsets/iems was for a flat and detailed sound signature for competitive fps. From the reviews the Drop 5xx is not A universal sound signature however the Drop 4xx is often good option in comparison to the 6xxs. The 4xx will give you warmth similar to the 6xxs but give you soundstage and slam with body to the bass. Overall the 4xx and 6xx widely accepted headphones for all round use. A schiit modi/magni with either headphone would nice beginner and end game setup. (depending on the person).

I can recommend, from experience, the Drop + Sennheiser HD 6XX for around $220. I also used the Schiit Audio Magni 3 amp and Modi 3 dac @ $99.99 each. They have improved models now, since I got them back in 2019. So, for what you need these would serve you well and save a couple hundred bucks in the bargain. Click on the dolphin to see what I use now. Hope this helps, just my two cents ;-)
