Mech Keys in the Windy City

more_vert
Having just returned from That Windy City Keeb Meet (a long-winded way of saying "The Chicago Meetup"), still recovering from the whirlwind that is a meetup weekend, I wanted to quickly put keeb to talk post (as they say) and share a bit about the event.

Drop's vendor table at That Windy City Keeb Meet 2024 First off, if I ran into you at the meetup, it was great to meet you! I had a blast (as always) getting to know and reconnect with keyboard fanatics from all around the country. It never ceases to amaze me how many overlapping and interconnected hobbies we all share—certainly helps keep the conversations interesting as we veer off into retro gaming, photography, music, and anything else that comes up.

All eyes on the announcement podium for giveaways 🫡 We were joined at the vendor tables by Sneakbox, Switch Oddities, and Tactile Zine—all run by amazing individuals. I wish I had taken pictures of all of their setups to share here. The only one I have is of Tactile Zine showing off both their own product (the hand-made zines on the left of the image) and some retro or retro-inspired boards on the right (more added throughout the meet).

I made the foolish mistake of shooting the vast majority of my "walking around" photos on film, many of which will be added here or perhaps in a later write-up showcasing some more keyboard film photography (stay tuned :) ).

All that said, if you've never been to a keyboard meetup and are at all interested in meeting like-minded hobbyists or getting hands on with some boards you might not otherwise see, definitely consider coming out to one! This meetup in Chicago is an annual event; no matter where you live, there are bound to be loads of meetups nearby (check https://kbd.news/meetup for an up-to-date roster around the world).

Drop should have a dedicated community section for promoting keyboard meets. As someone new to the hobby, I'd love to attend one
If anyone is interested in attending future That Windy City Keyboard Meetups, hit me up, and I'll connect you to our discord community! It was so much fun to host the event for a second year, and to see so many new faces! Amazing panel discussions this year, and the raffle prizes were unbelievable! Great meetup, best one so far!

I had a great time!!! Can't wait till next year now.
Awesome! Looks like a great event and a big turnout!
Meet ups are the best! It's nice to see boards that may not be as "popular" or ones that you don't usually see on Geekhack, Reddit, or on the popular keyboard discords (or other forums). DIY keebs, one-off projects, and just unique things in general at meet ups and then hearing the stories of the owners of why they created said project really makes the hobby more meaningful and fun. It's always great to feel like you're a part of something, especially a community, and meet ups drive that point home!
HubertTheMadGreat point about the unique and DIY boards! The number of wacky and wild split/ergo/ortho boards on display at meetups is always impressive, and many of them are one-offs or very small runs. Easily one of my favorite categories to poke around and learn about at meets. :) Beyond that, it turns out that people are my absolute favorite thing about this hobby, lol. Meetups are where the people are at!
