Swiss Army Knife - Victorinox Tinker (or the Spartan if you need to uncork some wine) is a great place to start! Light, relatively inexpensive, everything you need, and nothing you don't. I've had one along on most backpacking trips and day hikes since I was a scout many years ago. Of course, if you plan to process serious lumber and get into heavy bush crafting action, you'll need to add a fixed blade too (but that's a whole other thing). Depending on where you live and work, the SAK is also a relatively accepted, non-threatening blade in public.
