I never grew up eating turkey for Thanksgiving! So I've never gotten into the swing of the turkey thing.... This holiday we are eating crab as a new catch came into Half Moon Bay. I make Rose Pistola's recipe of Roasted Crab with Fennel and Garlic from their cookbook. I am going to add mashed potatoes, and an obligatory vegetable. Plus lemon merengue pie for dessert. Would love to hear from any non-turkey cookers out there...!!!

DebbieChangI promise you're not missing anything with the turkey. My family used to make one every year (nearly two decades) for the sake of tradition, until we all realized we didn't particularly care for it, and the obscene amount of prep just wasn't worth it. So we switched to honey-baked ham.

DebbieChangFor the vegetable, I'd suggest drizzling some fresh asparagus spears with olive oil and/or butter then grilling or oven roasting (grilling is best). Top with some sea salt and ground black pepper. Simple and pairs well with seafood.

DebbieChangI LOVE changing up the traditional menu and have had, on occasion, steak, seafood, etc.  However, the family loves the traditional sides - mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing (also called "dressing" in the South) so I do some of those as well.  Your meal sounds divine!

DebbieChangroast duck makes a mean substitute for roast turkey. as long as the duck is properly cooked to compensate for the high fat level the taste is way more intriguing than turkey. But i do love a properly roasted moist turkey!

DebbieChangI like turkey when it's done correctly but it's a tradition I didn't grow up with, either. Though my parents adopted ham well after us kids left the home. We potluck it and I usually prepare pork shoulder in some manner. Pernil was the favorite for several years, and lechon asado made it in a few times, one year as Cuban sandwiches, but they have since been supplanted by Momofuku's Bo Ssam recipe.

namhodHam's a good choice! We did prime rib one year. The traditionalists, which I am usually one of, were a little mad, but the prime rib was excellent! We bought some little turkey loaf thing partly as a joke and partly for those who couldn't stand not having turkey on Thanksgiving. Can't do prime rib often, though, due to the cost.
