Closed back: M40X are your go-to for cheap and great entry-level headphones. They're solidly built (with standard functionality and features), have great sound that's just toned-down but balanced M50X's that power well when hooked up to an amp. $80 is a steal and slapping pads later on when you have money just makes them even more of an amazing deal to sit at a desk or on the go. Anything better is probably a lot more expensive or similar with a little higher price tag. Except if you want a lot of bass. Then do with DT770. Super comfortable and holy shit that bass. But you'll probably go over your pricepoint because you'll mess up if you don't get the 250 Ohms variation and buy a good DAC/AMP. Open-back: If you want monitoring (they're great for serious listening and gaming) cans, go for the ATH AD series by Audio-Technica. I'd aim for the 700X since most people like that the most for the pricing and they're mostly all similar in sound signature with more bass as you go higher and more sound stage. Of course, slightly more accurate as you go higher. If you want all-arounders, similar to the M40X, go with the SHP9500. They're crazy cheap ($55 on NewEgg) and they're amazing openback headphones for the price. They have high clarity that's not veiled but is toned down for application and higher volumes, mids that are solid for monitoring and warmth, and bass that hits deep, but doesn't over-extend or meddles with the lower-mids. They also have great imaging and sound separation. Lastly, AKG7XX are great if you have that kind of cash. They're the sound signature I think people love and they're basically like the AD series (in style and in sound signature), but with a lot more warmth and apparent bass. They're extremely comfortable too, whereas the AD series you'll probably need to swap pads out for. Also, if you want to go with something similar to the amazing Fidelio X1/2 that's actually what I consider price efficiency, Fidelio L1-L2 are basically recessed versions of them with less definition, but with a wonderful depth and sound anyways. They're also gorgeous.
Bottom line: Closed-cans are hard to argue for<$150, which is why people literally only ever say ATH-M50X. Open back has a lot of choice, but multiple different options for your needs and pricepoints. Look at all of them and then chose according to what YOU like. Not the end-all god M50X or HD598.
How have i gotten aware of your posting; simple; MD sent me a message, God left the building, but left his message of knowledge and trust to speak on the behalf of all of us.
Personally, I can't in good conscious recommend any headphones under $300.
we've some good deals every other day for the Sennheiser HD 600 as example going "cheap" under $300 . My "rant" had been about the part "Everyone that's recommending either Senheisser HD598 or M50X doesn't have a clue in audio fidelity and what people actually prefer." No problem if someone is speaking for himself, but to claim to speak for the people is something i don't like that much, because no one is able to do so.
M50X vs M40X Both close back. I like m40x better because it has better mid range, and it's most neutral. The bass on m50x is not good. I would go with the l2, or m100 if your music calls for bass.
M100>L2>m40x>m50x Not including x2 for it's a open back headphone and it's not portable.
I personally owned all those
