I didnt want to physically modify the structure and wanted an option to fully reverse the mod so I used this mmcx connector.

ridhuankimThat's great! I was actually also thinking of installing MMCX although I would've gone with the crimp jack which would've required modifying the baffle still. I wasn't fond of the idea of having to bend the pin on the exposed panel mount version. But, since I would've had to modify the baffle anyway, I went with a more common 3.5mm solution.
Thankfully, the modification of the baffle didn't introduce any measurable change to the sound profile when I put it through a spectrum analyser.

ridhuankimWhere do you solder the ground?

ridhuankimDo you still dremel the wood because I'm having trouble fitting the cups back on because the pin is too long.

majikfxNope. The point of my mod is that it is completely reversible. You can cut the pin short.

ridhuankimI see. I guess I just need to work on my soldering skills to better solder both wires. Would wrapping the ground under the nut and then tightening it work just fine?

ridhuankimSo does that connect to a standard IEM MMCX cable? Or to a different style?

CaseyBillIt is standard mmcx.

ridhuankimJust wonder why you are using stereo connectors? Do you have to do some jumpers for the inside plugs?

Dragon2020Sorry can you explain in more detail? If your question was why not do balanced... Well I do have 2.5mm trrs mmcx cable. I also use it with Massdrop 2.5 trrs to 4pin balanced adapter when connecting to desktop amp but 3.5mm stereo works just fine.

ridhuankimDoes it work with a 4,4mm balanced output of my HiBy R5 with a 4,4mm to mmcx balanced cable? i mean is it a balanced connection then?

JacuzziJoeI have not tested if the ground is common on the headphone frame but I guess not. If your cable is balanced I don't think it will cause a short on the ground. I regularly use balanced cable and have not had any problem. I must have checked before whether the ground is common or not but I don't remember. If you have a tester you can try to see if the left and right steel frame holding the wood cup are electrically connected. I don't have a tester at the moment.

ridhuankimJust did the same MMCX mod. I did have to file away a small rectangle of both the plastic and the wood in order to get the MMCX connector to fit, but overall it was quite easy. I stripped the existing cable, and crimped a ring connector onto the brown ground wire. The ring connector was then sandwiched between the case and the gold washer + nut of the MMCX connector. After lots of test fitting, I filed a small square out of the plastic driver ring to make some more room for the connector, roughly the width of the screw portion of the MMCX connector. I then reattached the driver ring to the wood cup, and marked the location on the wood to file. I removed the cup again, and filed down the wood. I trimmed the MMCX connector pin short (to ~1.5 mm) and then soldered the active wire to the pin. After adding some Kapton tape to keep things insulated, I screwed the whole thing back together and it was done. Build photos: The MMCX connector fits perfectly in the pre-existing hole. How perfectly? There's a pre-milled ledge/detent on the outside face of the hole in which the MMCX connector sits flush within. It's like it was designed for this connector.

Basic setup, including a random ground wire which I stole the ring connectors from.

Here's the MMCX connector installed on top of the ground wire, and before the pin was was trimmed. I re-flowed the solder after trimming the pin down.

I wrapped the pin in some Kapton tape to ensure it will never come into contact with ground (although it's unlikely to anyway). Note the small square that I had to file out of the plastic and wood in order to make room for the edge of the MMCX connector. This isn't to make room for the pin (which basically fits under the unmodified frame), but rather the actual flat face of the connector below the pin. If you somehow find a lower profile connector, you might be able to get away without doing this.
search
Reassembled, it looks quite tidy.

You can just see the wiring and ring connector at this angle, however it isn't normally very visible.

Best of all, sound quality is completely unaffected. Now to find some MMCX cables that don't have memory wire pre-installed...

CrozoneAwesome job! I use FIIO mmcx cable as that did not have memory wire. I also use a short mmcx cable from FIIO and use FIIO BTR3. This makes it truly portable. You will notice people turning their head.

CrozoneHere is the standard length mmcx cable I use. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/183728427028 It also allows me to connect to balanced or I use 2.5mm/3.5mm adapter(also from FIIO) to connect to single ended. This 2.5mm cable also lets be use DROP's 4pin balanced adapter so I can connect to my desk amp in whichever mode I want.

ridhuankimDo you notice a volume difference when plugging it into 2.5mm direct vs using the 3.5mm adapter?

artc092Nope. And it shouldnt unless you are using bad cables. Or maybe you are using an impedance adapter?
