A drop THX 789 will do as the amp, as power is key. An objectivist DAC such as https://jdslabs.com/product/el-dac-ii/ takes care of the DA stuff. Now, how much of your budget is left for headphones?

rastusI was just looking at the THX 789 and the Magnius! The budget for the headphone is probably around $350.

akavictorA planar magnetic is going to give you metal bite, while a dynamic coil driven driver volumetrically moves a lot of air, to give you bass,, that then also shadows the rest of the spectrum if done heavily handed, done right they can present the voice of a goddess. btw, a decent USB cable, a decent RCA or balanced interconnects, a player like Audivarna.com and balanced cables for whatever headphones you choose, are all part of the chain. I'm going say try the drop HE5XX

rastusI was reading about planar magnetics headphones and I am curious to see how they sound with this kind of music. Dynamics are the only experience I have so far and the bass response you pointed out is what bothers me a little bit. I am looking for a more balanced sound, not so bass heavy. The HE5XX is on my wishlist next to the HD 6XX and the Monolith M1060. Any major diferences I should consider between theses headphones?

akavictorA while back... when kids came along, I went and listened to headphones as speakers were verboten, sleep depravation is real... waking children was a sin,, I needed something and bought on sound alone within my budget. This was also the advent of CD's, these stood out from the dynamic crowd with a clarity I had not heard before. Vintage Yamaha Orthodynamics: YH-2, YHD-2, and YH-3 - Headfonia Reviews I ended up with a pair of basically early planar magnetics, the Yamaha YDH-2, I still have them and they do sound nice. I have thought of using them on the road but the leather and cables are also vintage, they stay home. I got a used Audeze EL-8 as a gift along with an Audio-gd R2R 11 for my Son. The EL-8 may not have the stage of the ear-muffins LCD ones, but I do like them and may still replace my travel Phonon cans with a pair. The EL-8 was a collaboration with BMW, well made cans... It made me look, Audio-gd has a new R-2R-1, interesting: Audio-GD | Underwood HiFi The Elex stay as my dynamic go-to's, the HD600's are wonderful with great recordings and strip the make-up off poor ones, you hear the auto-tune in voices. I'm keeping my HD580's too. HD6XX, somehow never owned... or heard, 580>600>700 yes; 700's got sold after the Elex came. Just looked on Amazon, the M1060 @ $229.99, toss-up eh? If you can take the weight of the M1060, try them. rastusWell, I guess I have a lot of options and math to do now! :D I live in Brazil, so it's hard to buy some of these audio equip without going broke at the end of the month. Cables is a topic I didn't research well enough yet, but I'll look into it. Thanks a lot for the help!
