I find that when trying to convert folks to wet shaving they prefer the longer handled razors like the 23C because it feels right to the hand. After a a few weeks folks realize they can choke up on the razor for precision. But early on most DE razors feel too small. Also, I would never recommend a handle without significant knurling for a beginning DE user I loved my FUTUR (before it was stolen by a dirty barracks thief in Kuwait) but I always was wary of slipping with the polished handle.
I've bought Merkur from WalMart before. First time using the single blade razors, but must say I am impressed by how much better a single blade is to multiple.
Recommend it anyone over those expensive disposables. Get good replacement blades though. Not terribly expensive to get a lot of them. So far the Astra ones on Amazon do nicely. Supposedly some are better than others but are best off left for those who have used stuff like these Astra ones first for a while. Or something like that.
Either way, I can finally shave again without razor burn. Love it.
To echo what Ab_aker said, my first safety razor was a Gillette Tech I got on eBay for $10, and there are a ton of different style Razorock razors for $20 available new. There's no need to put up big money if you don't know you're going to keep on keeping on with the wet shaving.
The long handle version is good for people with large hands. That's the only difference. I own the Merkur long handle razor and I couldn't be happier. You will cut yourself the first few times, but it's much easier on your skin in the long run.
Just to throw in my two cents; I currently use a van der hagen safety razor that I bought for $20 at a grocery store. All of these razors are going to nick you pretty badly until you get used to the technique, but after a couple shaves, it's pretty easy to get a very close shave with one pass. It depends how committed you are to shaving with a safety razor... If it's this or nothing, I'd pony up the cash and buy one for $50, but if you're just trying it out, I'd do what I did and buy a cheapo razor to test first. (P.S. Oil under cream helps with the first few shaves)
