Similarly, you claim the Synology is "only $300 -$500" but that's the cost of an /unpopulated/ Synology, which you directly compare to the $1500 version of the FreeNAS mini, conveniently neglecting to mention that the FreeNAS mini is /fully/ populated with 3 TB drives for a total of 12 TB of storage, compared with the Synology's 0 TB of storage for "only $500."
You get what you pay for, that's for certain.
