At first, this adapter blew me away; I'd tried several others, most of which had decent audio quality but would frequently exhibit this metallic feedback that made extended listening or dead air particularly awkward; these did NONE of that. Crystal-clear, no dip in quality, a genuinely amazing experience all around...
...while it lasted. Last night, maybe two months in, it crapped out. Left side doesn't work, right side has that familiar feedback. Triple checked with other devices to make sure it wasn't my IEMs' cable. No sign of any physical damage. Huge bummer.
Great while they lasted, but at 35 bucks after tax, I expect a product that's gonna last more than two months of casual listening.
A very good purchase, makes my music crispy
Edit: this thing is very sensitive and disconnects if I tap it. It needs more pins or something because of even a little bit of dust comes in then it fails
Edit 2: Now any little bump causes my music to stop playing. I cant recommend this
I lost my first one a few years ago and finally decided to buy another one. I don't remember it coming with the pouch last time so that's a great addition. The braided cable is very flexible and build quality seems pretty good. I have no problem driving 250ohm DT770s with this adapter.
I learned that I have to plug the adapter into the iPhone before plugging in IEMs otherwise the iPhone doesn’t detect the device. Very frustrating that I can’t just leave the adapter attached to IEM cable.
Don’t waste your time or money (*Lightning Version)
It allows you to connect your wired (3.5mm) headphones to your phone at best and at worst you just wasted over 30 dollars on something that isn’t even heavy enough to be used as a paperweight and it sounds worse than an Apple 3.5mm to Lightning adapter. Sure it gets the job done, in that it will connect wired headphones to your phone (iPhone 15 Max in my case), but honestly I barely noticed any difference when compared to a basic 3.5mm to lightning adapter paired with the DAC inside of my phone when compared to this adapter & its external DAC. if anything I think the existing internal iPhone DAC might sound slightly better. It’s for sure more convenient. So don’t waste your money, if this was more than $30 I might go return it, but to pack it up and ship it back isn’t worth my time and effort with Los Angeles traffic being what it is. So If you’re going to get an external DAC & adapter combo like this one for $30+ you might as well get yourself a better dongle for $20-$30 more as it will provide you with extra power and better sound. This is honestly one of the most disappointing purchases I’ve made to date at drop.com. (I’ve owned many products sold by Drop and a few that were developed in conjunction with Drop; Focal Elex, HD58X, HD6XX, Edition XX, THX 789 Amp, Grace DAC, PC38X, …) Most of these products I have loved, or at least liked/enjoyed, but this thing is going straight into the trash can where it belongs. I haven’t been this disappointed in a drop.com purchase since the HD8XX and its ridiculous sticker “damping” that completely ruined the magical soundstage and treble the HD800S had when paired with a decent tube amp for music or when just gaming in general. I know Drop didn’t design these or collaborate with the company, but surely they must test a product before selling it to their customers. I can’t imagine anyone hearing this and saying “That’s a clear improvement over an iPhone internal DAC. Our customers will love this and gladly pay $35 for it.” If someone said anything even close to that after hearing this DAC / adapter then they should be fired immediately.
I apologize for the long-winded and clearly negative review, but I’m hoping my experience with this product can stop at least 1 person from making the same mistake that I did by wasting hard-earned money on something that is nothing more than electronic waste that will surely end up in a landfill.
P.S.
I’m still a “fan” of Drop.com, but they need to do better in the future if I am going to keep coming back in the future. (Prime example beyond this item is their own FOCAL x DROP ELEX headphones that are currently selling for hundreds less on headphones.com {$699 on Drop.com | $499 on Headphones.com} ) Their prices aren’t even competitive on their own gear anymore?!?? And they don’t bother to price match like other sites.
