Looking for a good alternative to the senn hd600 etc, to pair with DV 336se. Does not seem to be many high impedance headphones out there.
Try the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium. For tubes it's best to get the 600ohm version. They also have a higher end headphone called the DT 1990 pro, which only comes in 250ohm, which works quite well with tubes as well. Sennheiser's higher end models also work well on tubes although the 600/650 are your best bet there. Beyer has other models too, like the DT 770/880 pro/880 premium/1770 pro which all have high impedance options(880 premium having a 600ohm option).
Outside of the more obvious models you can search on google. Impedance isn't the only factor on whether tubes will improve a headphone but you will need to some searching. AKG is said to do well on tubes but I'm not sure about OTL like this. Any Planars you want to use on tubes should be above 32 ohms if you are considering them (the M1060 is 50ohm for example). There is also no harm in simply trying out other headphones you have laying around once you have the DV, just don't expect them all to work well.
Thanks for the info. I'll contiue my research on what will hopefully be a good match. I just want to be confident that if/ when I drop three bills on a pair of headphones, I'm going to be a happy camper.
It would be great if we could take our hp amps to a local place that had a bunch of headphones to try out. Oh well... one can still dream.
