Darryl22Yes. There's not a ring at the inner peaks for the pole tip because I didn't want to add weight for something that tends to not be used very often, but you can certainly pitch just the inner alone.
You would unclip the inner from inside the fly, remove the guylines from the fly, attach the guylines to the inner peaks (girth hitch below the buckles), and then tie a little loop in the guylines for the pole tips (or wrap the guylines around the poles).

Regarding the width, the floor width depends on how high you pull up the inner, since that pulls up the walls. The floor can be anywhere from 26 - 30" depending on how high you pull it. So yeah it could be a bit wider than 28" here.

As an update, here is picture of the X-Mid pitched just the fly. Easy to do.
