If you have a 4.4 cable that you can use in these headphones, you can hear better sounds
If you use an amplifier, it makes a good sound. Otherwise, you just plug it into a 3.5 mm and you won't hear a good sound.
Also, if you have a 4.4 cable that you can use in these headphones, you can hear better sounds.

Great first Planar Magnetic
This is my first Planar Magnetic headphone (got it on sale at around $100) , so take my review with a grain of salt. The only way I can describe it when I have it plugged into my vintage receiver (Philips high fidelity labs from 1978) is it sounds wonderful. It definitely needs the amplification, but when it is powered properly it makes songs I would normally skip sound fantastic. At any volume it sounds as if you are listening to a nice traditional set of speakers. They are are a bit heavy, but they are very comfortable and I only use them while sitting on my couch in my living room, so I have never had any issues wearing them well over an hour. If you don't have any of the "higher end" planars already, and have a decent amp to power them, I highly recommend.

Planar sound on budget
Pleasantly surprised by the speed and dynamics. The sound is quite different to the usual dynamic drivers. Makes me wonder the sound of more expensive planar headphones. The set is on a little heavy side but I can usually use for up to 2 hours without feeling tired.
They sound great, except having a very noticeable 3-5% volume and higher frequency difference between ears.
Not a huge deal as i can use peace to balance it, but it's not perfect. I'm Australian so returning these is too much of a hassle as it took over 2 months and 3 attempts to get them to me. (Yes, i tried switching cables etc..)

Great set of planars for a reasonable price
Great set of planar cans. Construction quality is pretty decent and the sound brings the crisp and fast bass for a low price. Only time will show how well they hold up. One thing I will add, wait until these drop to $99 from the $129 original (Very often).

Solid Headphones for the Price Point
These headphones for 99 dollars is a good price point even though the Hifiman He400se is 10 dollars more. At that point, it is making a decision based on the look and aesthetic of the headphone (which I did because I am not a fan of the silver on the He400se).
The headphones are solid headphones with good sound quality. I do not know much else to say for these headphones other than them being good tuning and they are just good. Even though they are good headphones, I am do think the that the He4xx that it competes with are the better headphone if they can be bought on sale. Overall I am happy with these headphones. Get it at a good price!

Great sound, Incredible for this price
For $100 I'm not sure what will stand up to this in over-ear headphones. I also have their cousin HE-4XX which I used for a side-by-side. These are a bit quieter, but they respond to a little extra power insanely well. They're warm, just a tad dark which removes any trace of harsh sibilance, but the detail is still wonderful. They feel a little more snug than the 4XX without any uncomfortable pressure on the ears or head.
I've been testing them with my FLAC collection from Mozart and Bach to Black Sabbath and Linkin Park. I can hear guitar amplifiers fizzling, I can hear the violins clear as day with no sharpness, and Alexis Cole's smooth alto voice plays out beautifully around my head. Instrument separation across the stereo soundstage is really nice. The orchestra plays out around you, and dual-guitarist rock bands flank either side of a mix.
These are not going to be your crystal-clear, clean reference headphones for any music mastering because that's not what they are made to be. They have warmth and character and depth to them that makes music feel immersive and enveloping.
UNBEATABLE at $100.

For the price...
It would be very hard to beat these headphones for the price. The sound is unbelievable, and would beat almost anything at this price. The build quality is a little so so with this brand, but it's usable and better with upgraded ear pads. An DAC/amplifier makes them a lot better too, especially when it comes to loudness, but they are usable without one. I've seen reviews suggesting that this is one of the best headphones for sound quality that Hifiman offers, despite being one of the cheapest. That's one of the strange aspects of this company, but if you want planar magnetic headphones and don't want to spend $1,200, these will do the job and sound great, possibly better than many of their more expensive peers.
