This isn't my first Drop knife or my first Reate, or even my first Reate Lambert model, but man they've really outdone themselves with this one. Immediately after taking it out of the pouch I was blown away by just how nice it is. Relatively heavy for a knife this size, but very solid feeling, great ergonomics, great action, flawless fit and finish and attention to detail. Also new to Fatcarbon and it might replace marbled carbon fiber as my new favorite scale material, pics don't do it justice. Absolutely recommended, a steal at the price. If you like this design itself I can't imagine being disappointed with the execution.

WOW!!!
You know the sound a high quality car makes when you close the drivers door, that muffled thud that speaks quality. This knife makes that sound upon deployment. Flicking this beast open gives you that assured feel of high quality. If you don’t like heavy knives, this won’t be for you, it’s nearly 6 oz. feels sold in the hand and the scales are amazing. From the pictures, I thought the scales would have a rough surface, it’s the complete opposite; they are smooth as butter and they shimmer in the light, giving it the appearance of a rough, textured surface. I’m half tempted to get all four colors, but it seems they’re raising the price $50 more, after the first shipment.

The Drop/Reate collab knives always tend to elicit comments like, “You’re getting a Reate knife for such a bargain!” I’ve sometimes wondered if that was the case. With the Drop Raine, there happens to be a series of knives currently sold by Reate also designed by Kirby Lambert, and I happen to own one of them - the Augustus. I thought it would be fun to compare the standard Reate model with the Drop version and see where they’re similar and different.

The Raine and the Augustus are both production versions of Kirby Lambert customs. The Drop model will save you at least $50 at current market price. While the Raine is by no means a “value” knife, there are a number of design & build choices evident to help lower the cost. The Raine uses RWL34 blade steel; the Augustus uses Bohler M390. The blade shapes are very different - the Raine offers a more basic drop point and the Augustus features a wicked compound grind. Raine’s blade is stonewashed; Augustus is satin finished. Both are beautifully done and there’s a case to be made for the simpler blade looking better in this case. If nothing else, the Raine is definitely more functional. The Augustus’ bolster is smooth titanium. On the Raine, the boosters are aggressively stonewashed. It’s a good look, but again, Probably more cost effective. The Augustus makes use of a blue anodized pivot with a brass pivot collar. The Raine uses standard Drop-branded pivot hardware that blends in with the bolsters. Handle material is a beautiful canvas micarta on the Augustus. On the Raine, it’s FatCarbon, a blend of carbon fiber and resin that’s not like anything I’ve seen on a knife before. It looks - hopefully this is a compliment - like a really funky bowling ball. And it works well on this knife, giving it visual interest without making it look overly luxurious. The Augustus is shipped with a set of phosphor bronze washers in case you want to swap out the ceramic bearings. The Raine is bearings-only, but out of the box, the action on the Raine is surprisingly better than the Augustus. I was also surprised to find that the flipper tab is sharper on the Augustus. It’s a little more comfortable on the Raine. Is the Raine a “screaming deal on a Reate?” I wouldn’t go that far. There’s a lot of value engineering in this knife. Probably more than the $50 you’re saving. But the Raine is an excellent knife and it’s well worth the price tag. And if I’m honest, it probably does a better job of just being a knife. I’ve owned the Augustus for a while, and I love it but I almost never carry it. The moment I got the Raine I took it to the work bench. I have a feeling that between the two, the Raine is the one I’ll be going to more often.

Awesome knife
Just got delivered. I did the red, black blade. Spectacular handle scales. The light reflections is really great. Action is perfect, exact, great sound opening and closing. Pictures don’t do it justice. Worth the wait since July. Very, very pleased.

MikeDeRosia23After ordering it in July and receiving it in Feb., that is true Drop customer service, I would have ask for my money back after 3 months and now on this second go around Drop is stating 2-5 weeks when we are not receiving flights or shipments from China during the Corona virus. I hope this takes them out of the knife business as they don't know or respect the basics of knife selling. I know Drop, why not transport the knives to the US store them then distribute them directly to the end user that normally waits 4 days for a knife. I am done with Drop and it's BS format for sales.

Did not meet expectations
I am not a recurve blade guy, but this knife really looked cool enough to become one. I received this knife in the “Mars Valley” varient. Initially I was very impressed with the fit and finish, and the Mars Valley design is just beautiful. I cannot deny the brilliance that went into the design of this knife. However, I was not impressed with the execution. The action is sluggish and kind of grindy, and just a major disappointment. Also, the blade edge was nowhere near what I would expect from a Reate knife. Sure, I can disassemble the knife, clean and lube the bearings to make it a great flipper, and I can sharpen the edge, but I just didn’t feel that I should have to do either of those things out of the box on a knife that’s almost $300.

No Impression
Well myself as well as someone in a knife group I'm a part of both ordered this knife, and funny thing, BOTH have been lost in transit some how. Coincidence? something is fishy here. Drop just refunds you the cost saying that they only made what was ordered so they won't send a replacement. BUT as you can see by the listing, they are still selling this knife. Can you smell what Drop is cooking here?

berniekwhat a joke!!! crap service. i also read above that someones "anodization" rubbed off. another joke. stating it got "wet" in transit. for a 300 dollar knife, that's completely unacceptable. Can't get wet??? get the hell outta here with that nonsense. I think maybe you dodged a bullet with this one.

Just received my blue Kirby Lambert Raine knife today. Smooth opening and sharp right out of the box. Fit and finish look good. Fairly well balanced. Clip tension is perfect. Lock up only about 20% - 25% but feels solid with no blade play. So far so good overall!

Don't believe it when Drop states they have it in stock and ready to ship.
I ordered my Raine on May 15 and got conformation it had shipped on May 18th. I gave Drop another chance after being burned a couple of times on shipments even before covid., their problem is they can't sem to tell the truth. I purchased this knife after reading in their ad that it was "In Stock" and ready to ship, they failed to mention in stock in the Netherlands and now after almost 2 months without any tracking information available and trying to contact them twice to find for them to even address your inquiry it will take 4 days only for them to tell you in the initial response that they are busy and will get back to you when they can. Please, please someone shot me in the head if I even go on their site again. I have since purchased the Raine on the secondary market so someone at least has received there order but can someone please tell what carrier system from Europe can possibly take in this case 2 months ? I'm sure Drop must have priced the absolute cheapest means possible and to add injury to insult if it is as with my previous knife order my knife will appear in a bag with the box crushed that will appeared to have been to hell and back. Drop, hell no never again you scoundrels, customer service is part of why and where I purchase a product and I would rather go without than to buy from you people again. Amen Update: I finally received my knife on July 24th, 9 weeks from the date of order where the description read "In stock and ready to ship" tell me people where in the world could have this knife have shipped to take 9 weeks ? DROP is just out and out lying as they have in the past and they are unable to preform on a basis I accept as normal. As a rule I do not per-pay for any knife and that is the business that DROP subscribes to. They tell you it is ready to ship when indeed it is just BS and the reason I believe that is they never provide a working tracking number and then tell you after you have waited five days for a reply that it is just the fault of the carrier, losers play the blame game and these folks are losers. I promise you I will never again play their game and if I want one of their productions I will buy it on the secondary market as I did with this model. Anyone wanting a Raine Arctic Blue model contact me and unlike this outfit I will have it in the mail the next day with a tracking number, I presently have this knife listed on BF.

Though I strongly support US-based companies, quality is by no means a strictly American attribute. As you know, America dropped the ball on quality in automobiles for decades and had their lunches eaten by Japanese companies who had a corporate culture focused on quality and efficiency. Blind nationalism among the customer base does little to encourage many companies to strive for excellence.

not sure what you mean by "new Indian CEO," Steve El-Hage is one of the original founders of (Mass)Drop and has been the CEO since the company was founded in 2012. As far as I can tell he's Canadian, not that someone's nationality has any bearing on the quality of their work or character.

Good Flipper. Star Down for Paint Job
I got the Purple version of this knife, and sadly the moment I got it the purple polish on thr aluminum section (the purple aluminum) wipped of instantly. I don't mind the color change myself, but it's still a concern. It's flick is nice and steady and it's good even for my big hands.

passwurdI wanted to add to this last comment, the aluminum is meant to be "Anodized", which is basically a thin layer of color applied to titanium through sending electric particles through it (or something like that) because of this it can rub off in shipping, or if it gets wet. Turns out my knife got a bit wet during the shipping process. But the good news is you can re-anodize it if you know how. The knife is easy to disassemble too, and lets you take out the aluminum frame completely. You can even give it new designs!
