Low volume
I’ll admit I have some hearing loss, but I have to stick with my Archel Pro due to at least being able to turn the volume up to satisfying levels. I get the impression that there is barely any amp power coming out. This thing does have a really clean sound. I just wish I could hear more of it.

BribucklAre you using the gain knob on the front of the amp? Depending on the impedance of the headphone used you will want to set the gain knob to the appropriate setting.

BribucklI have bad hearing also. That is why I use the AAA ONE as a pre-amp for the THX 789. I can say that setup creates quality sound and even powers my DT880's at 600 ohms. I honestly am not sure why more people don't use a pre-amp (can be a DAC/AMP as well) to increase the signal power into your favorite amp. I have the Burston Audio 3X with the RME ADI-2 DAC/AMP feeding it and except for more power and detail I could save a lot of money and be happy with the THX setup. It is nearly impossible to get the high power sound people are looking for out of a single amp unless you spend a lot of money. Even the Burston class A amp did not do it for me until I added the RME as a pre-amp. Just try feeding your THX 789 using the THX AAA and you will hear things in your music you never heard before and it will get as loud as you need it to for only $300+. I would call this the poor man's audiophile end game setup using your favorite headphones! I may very well sell my Burston/RME combo except the RME allows me to adjust R/L levels according to my bad ear hearing level to allow me to hear a fully balanced stereo sound. Trust me on this, don't go down the audiophile rabbit hole and spend thousands to upgrade. Use the THX combo and XLR cables with Sundara's, HD6XX's, or splurge for Audeze LCD X's or your favorite headphones and spend your money on something else!

cpo.usn.retiredWhat volume level would you keep your THX 789 on when using the THX ONE as a preamp? Would it stay at one constant level or would you change it depending on the headphone etc.

Paullieb213Since both the THX amps have a gain setting you can experiment with what sounds best to you. I have my gain on the AAA set at 3 and the gain on the 789 at 2 or 3 depending on the headphones and adjust volume as you want. I would only suggest that you start at a low volume and gain on the 789 until you get a sense of how much power your headphones require and to prevent damaging your headphones. I usually just turn the volume down on my 789 no matter what gain setting it's on and slowly turn up the volume and then adjust gain lower if it gets loud at a low volume level. Trust me, you won't be sorry to try this setup. These amps are fairly good by themselves but you add them together and they make a great amp combination!
