I come here just for the conversation. The only value that "deals" like this one add to massdrop is entertaining discussions. Hard drives fall in the same category: "Pay a premium and buy from us. And if that doesn't convince you, we can also make you wait for your new toy." Alex

Ordered a similar item for a nephew for Christmas from MD and was very disappointed. It was clearly just a factory showroom-model with zero thought for how the brand should improve beyond the factory build. Not much heft to the materials, digital zoom only, and you have to bump through menus in Chinese to find how to change to English to move past the default settings.

I own this microscope. It's not terrible, but you should know: - It does NOT zoom to 600x (even though advertised as such) - It does NOT have a 1080p display (even though advertised as such) - At $59.99, you're paying MORE than the price it's always at on eBay ($40) or pretty much anywhere selling it. Getting more and more disappointed with Massdrop's prices and knowledgeability on what they sell.

Not with the extra shipping cost if you live anywhere but the US.

This shouldn't cost more than $25-30 max. the parts are so cheap to make nowadays due to smartphones and it's price is way more than it should be.

I'd like it better if the stand allowed for adjusting the vertical height above the subject since that is how you adjust the magnification. As it is, I had to make an adjustable stand for the microscope so that I could get the appropriate distance for the field of view and magnification I wanted.

Is it powerful enough to see bacteria?

I have this, and am almost certain you cannot see bacteria with it. I think the 600x rating is inflated.

I think most of the zoom is electronic and not optic so it's sort of resize or upscale which mean fake zoom factor.

I have mine. Magnification and picture are amazing. But nearly every time I picture, or try to go into view mode, it freezes/locks up. Only cure is to push the reset button. It says firmware v 1.0.0. I am using a 32 GB Sandisk Ultra microSD (speed 10). Anyone know if there is newer firmware? Manual says it can take up to 64 GB card. Does it need slower/lower tech microSD card

Just a heads up: I have a couple similar digital microscopes that also have the controls mounted on the imaging device, and I can tell you they are a pain in the ass to operate.
Touching and twisting the focusing knob will move the device, and those movements - however small - have an effect that is literally magnified the more you are zoomed in. Then after you adjust to perfect focus, and release the knob, the device will ever so slightly move again, resulting in a not-in-focus image. This particular unit on Massdrop is going to be doubly troublesome because it not only has the controls mounted on the imaging device, but also the screen; everything is going to jostle.
In short: if you value a solid, well-focused image - especially at greater magnifications - then you need to purchase a digital microscope with the controls on a separate controller. I can't recommend a specific model though - prices, form factors, and features are all over the board.
