It states there's software control in the description. As far as a requirement to run in the background for the thing to function, that's going to be answered by asking something like Elgato's product support or Google for immediate answers instead of waiting a day to get a semi-sassy reply that only answers half of what you're looking for lol

Download Elgato's Stream Deck software. It runs in the background on your PC or Mac. From there you can configure all of the buttons, assign images and actions.
