Man I've been staring at this for 3 days now, anyone with the bigger brothers (E-Mu Teak, TH-X00.....etc) can comment on their experience? I want something lighter and more comfortable to use than my Denon D5200, but would the sound quality difference be really noticeable? Also I'm reading conflicting reviews regarding comfort. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

HydeGet a headband cushion off eBay that can be wrapped around the D5200. Some are just wool things that wrap and button up. I felt TH-X00 was pretty underwhelming next to my Sennheiser HD8DJ. I'd forget the TH-X00 if I were you, it is overpriced hard like Shure's SRH1540. So much more expensive that the closed headphones in the $100-$200 range, yet with sound quality that kills none of them. At all. Comfort mods are hassle-free and super easy, well worth your time if you love the D5200's sound.

HydeI have the Teaks and they're my favorite midfi bassy headphone. They have a nice powerful low end and they don't recess the mids to oblivion ot swamp them with bass to give it to you. The Teaks are a perfect example of bassy done right, IMO. When I bought them I had done an almost year long search for a pair of bassy headphones that still had solid mids and detail to go with a powerful and articulate low end. I also wanted to keep it under $750. I tried and resold/returned various Fostex, Sony, Denon, Meze, etc. before I tried the Teaks at a friend of a friends house. I jumped on my phone and ordered a pair right away and I haven't looked back. If you have any specific questions just ask and I'll do my best to answer.

jbcalbears5150LOL ok so a lot has changed since then hahaha. I did end up buying E-Mu Walnut and I thought the ear pad opening was too small, which is crazy because I even thought V-Moda M100 was fine which already had small ear pad. Also I thought sound was "okay" so I decide to go back to the big headphone. I actually had E-Mu Teak before but always thought the vocal sounded too far or veiled. Maybe there is a recess in 2khz-4khz region. Otherwise rest of the spectrum is good but I can't get over the vocal veil. I've recently bought Lawton Modded TH900, and initial impressions were bad. Then I changed ear pad and man what a huge difference. Lawton pad is designed for detail but lacks bass and sounds thin/cold. I'm currently using Dekoni TH900 Leather pad with Attenuation Ring. I have Eikon pad on order. So hopefully this will be the end game. But for anyone who ever tries TH900, ear pad makes huge difference. I almost sold it until I changed the pad then now it's good. Cheers!

HydeI totally should have checked the date on your post lol! It's funny, but a Lawton TH900 was the headphone I sold second to last before I bought the Teaks. I owned a modded Ebony in between and the Lawton TH900s really are a very nice headphone. As for the Teak pads, I changed them out almost immediately. I found them to be just fine comfort wise, but I wanted to try to bring the mids forward a bit and open up the soundstage. I pad roll on pretty much every headphone I buy and the rolling I did on the Teaks paid off. Anyways, I'm glad you found your bassy happy place. Happy listening!

jbcalbears5150No worries, hahah audio hobby time can move very fast sometimes LOL. Out of curiosity what did you not like about TH900, is it the lack of mids? Also did you know which wood cup you got (Type 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)? And pad rolling can be a nightmare on Fostex headphones I find, since it affects sounds a lot. Which pad did you end up using on the E-Mu Teak? But yeah never say never I guess hahah, I'll see how it goes with Lawton TH900 + Eikon pad. For now I think I'm happy with it. Previously I also tried D2000, D5000, TH-X00 Mahogany, Ebony, E-Mu Teak, Rosewood, Bambo, D5200 and D9200. Let's just say it's been a journey, oh and which dac/amp are you using with your Teak? Thanks!

HydeYup, the mids were just too recessed for me. With bass that heavy and treble that bright I just found myself missing some presence in the mids to bring them together, you know what I mean? I tried Lawton TH900s with both type 2 and type 3 cups as they are supposed to be the two that offer the most balance and recovery of the mids. The type 3s in particular did a decent job, but it just wasn't enough for me. Don't get me wrong though, on the right tracks yhe TH900s can be killer and I definitely get why they have a loyal following. Keep in mind, I'm not a basshead by any means. Most of my headphones don't stray very far from neutral. The Teaks and the various Fostex and Denons and such before them are basically my only truly bassy over ears because I like to have a solid bassy option available. And yeah, audio time is several times faster than regular time. Kinda like dog years lol!

jbcalbears5150lol oh yeah I can totally see what you mean about the mids, though I think ear pad helps a lot. Smaller ear hole = more mids. So the stock big hole TH900 earpad is bound to have sucked out mids. And yes I remember Teak being the Fostex with the most mids. I just couldn't fix the vocal recession no matter what I did otherwise it would've been good. It's ok different trade off haha. Also different taste for different people so it's all good!
