The best open-back headphones strive to break free from the headbands and earcups that bind them. Engineering to emulate the natural listening experience—where sound reaches your ears through the open air, from a source right in front of you—our Axel Grell-designed OAE1 signature Headphones took a step closer to that freedom. Naturally, they sold out fast. Now they’re back in all-black version with the exact same acoustic design. Meet the Drop + grell OAE1: a groundbreaking pair of headphones with game-changing driver geometry and an ultra-expansive soundstage.
I might just not be used to the direction the speakers fire or maybe the amp isn't presenting the sound stage exactly, I have one of the other amps Schiit makes on the way and I'll see how that does.
Pros
It can convey an impressive sense of scale to some recordings.
Sturdy and aesthetically attractive set of headphones.
Hits deeper than a lot of competing headphones.
Cons
Can suffer from bass-bloated performances.
Tight clamping
Only comes with a single-ended cable
Besides listening to music I've discovered my OAE1 are ideal for mixing when the final destination is for speaker listening, much better IMHO than the HD660S2 and Neumann NDH30 that I were using. So something to keep in mind.
Rob80bI forgot I was wearing them and used them for mixing today a track in Ableton Live. I was surprised at how the mix translated even after a couple hours without taking a break. My ears didn't get fatigued, which is unusual.
I enjoy the OAE1 signature model quite a bit. Wanted a different tuning than my Koss/MassDrop ESP 9** electrostatic. These fill the bill and are a nice change of pace. The sound is out in front of my face. Closest I've heard headphones approach speakers. Grell & Drop should be congratulated for advancing headphone science and at a reasonable price.

So from the comments here of owners of the first run we can safely assume the tuning on these is atrocious?. Well you can always eq certain aspects but how is the comfort. They look good besides one cup running? a dummy plug. I would assume that's from them just using mirror mold. It seems these aren't very good from the discussion I read here. Boy do I miss the days off Massdrop and how they would innovate and bring interesting new takes to hobbies. My current daily driver are the Harmonicdyne Zeus elite and I own Dan clark aeon and the fairly decent Hifiman h5xx and jubilee. I love trying budget yet great sounding cans.
Yaderb11Regarding your comment on the earcup plugs, the OAE1 is designed to work with the cable plugged into either side of the headphone. The overhead cable allows the signal to be shared between ear cups.
ViXoZuDoFWIW I believe the TWS1X was made when alex grell didn't own the Grell company brand (I think it was owned by some investors from china or something). Grell since bought back his own brand company and the OAE1 was produced under his complete control. I've had one of these from the signature run since July and have been wearing/using it daily since and have had no issues so far with wear or failure so far.
Would it be possible to get stock pads down the road as well? I really like the current tuning and am concerned aftermarket pads may alter the sound slightly
bought on the first batch, listened to it for few days... so bad put it back into the box.... now after few months got it out again, listened to it for 10 min and put it back in..... same conclusion... atrocious tuning
