The CAL! is a terrific headphone from the perspective of its sound. I believe it is still on InnerFidelity's wall of fame, in fact. Build quality is a bit sketchy, however, with thin wires, a flimsy headband, and cheap plastics used on the bails and earcups. The wooden cups on the version offered here are a clear improvement, but at the current price for the CAL! on Amazon I am not sure the MD price is justified. Still, the wooden cups sure look nice, don't they?

Yes, the pads can be removed and easily replaced. Brainvwavz HM5 pads and angled pads will fit these headphones, and the Dekoni pads that were a recent drop will fit them, too. I'm sure there are others that will fit, as well.

I received my headphones yesterday. Sound it decent, though I have done a side by side comparison yet with my HD800s yet. The earcups are a bit on the small side; I have some difficulty with them fitting over my entire ear. They are noticeably lightweight and comfortable. Good product for the price.

Well, I have a bit of mixed feeling about the headphones.
Sound amazing, just the sound signature I love, with Soft yet punchy bass that doesn't overpower the wounder-full mids, highs are good as well.
Build is up to snuff, the clicks on the headband adjustment are just so satisfying. And the wood is a nice touch, as you see they look apart. But why? why the cable isn't detachable? it isn't too long and terminates in a 3.5mm jack, but still non detachable and is a Y split. =[
Comfort, they are light, but the ear-cups are just in the middle where they are too small for over ear and to large to be on ear for me =[
Modding is a breeze, the cups disassemble completely with 4 screws and have plenty space in the cup for other mods (see next point for my mod simple)
All my issues with this headphones are solvable (And yes i solved them already) the pads i replaced with Brainwavz HM5's, and I modded the headphones so they will have 3.5mm mono sockets. Also looking into testing some ear-cup fillers to play with the sound signature.

It took some custom work but I am using some T70 pads (thinner than DT pads) that seem to work nicely but I think there might be a resonance I didn't notice before? It turned out nicely enough I think. https://imgur.com/a/QL9Eb It's not exactly easy to swap them out either to check the stock pads for the resonance.

The MSR7 pads are perfect size for me... Just barely big enough for my whole ear AND sound very good! Perfect fit on the headphones too

I tried these headphones and had a nice chat with the founder himself at an audio headphone festival. He was a very nice guy that described the process of the production of the headphones. If i remember correctly, he would spend hours at the factory just to pick out which wood will match with the other which was followed by some kind of coating to really bring out the wood grains. He described wood as having their own natural properties which is why they are used in instruments such as guitars, violins etc. He didnt really talk much about the drivers. Personally, the headphones themselves look really nice themselves and although it looks heavy, its actually pretty light. One thing i would like to see improved though is the headband itself which looks a bit cheap. Sound wise, theyre not bad. The vocals seem layered and soundstage wise is pretty great. It has some warmth to it and has good seperation, I cant really remember how the bass and treble was but to sum it up, its worth the money.

What are these, like premium class CAL! ?

Foster always made the entirety of the headphone for both Denon and Creative (drivers, headband, cable, cups... everything). The D1001 and CAL!1 were actually made at the same time (I briefly owned both, just to see if the CAL! sounded different, they didn't). There was also another company that made a weird multicolor version that was also identical, I can't remember the name though. The differences Tyll noticed between the CAL! and D1001 ended up being due to model to model variation more than any difference in the model's overall sound. With the E-MU Walnut it looks like Foster makes everything, except the cups, which E-MU sources out, and the packaging. Creative didn't need to sell or transfer any rights, as any company who wanted could have ordered this headphone from Foster for roughly ten years now. There have been at least 4 different companies to use it, most of which overlapped. Denon famously cut ties with Foster, leading to the complete trash the the Denon headphone line became. Creative still uses Foster for most of its headphone needs (E-MU is owned by Creative).

fjrabonThanks for clarifying. I didn't realize that there was a time where the two product lines overlapped. I thought the Denon line had ended before Creative took up the reigns.

Man I've been staring at this for 3 days now, anyone with the bigger brothers (E-Mu Teak, TH-X00.....etc) can comment on their experience? I want something lighter and more comfortable to use than my Denon D5200, but would the sound quality difference be really noticeable? Also I'm reading conflicting reviews regarding comfort. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Yup, the mids were just too recessed for me. With bass that heavy and treble that bright I just found myself missing some presence in the mids to bring them together, you know what I mean? I tried Lawton TH900s with both type 2 and type 3 cups as they are supposed to be the two that offer the most balance and recovery of the mids. The type 3s in particular did a decent job, but it just wasn't enough for me. Don't get me wrong though, on the right tracks yhe TH900s can be killer and I definitely get why they have a loyal following. Keep in mind, I'm not a basshead by any means. Most of my headphones don't stray very far from neutral. The Teaks and the various Fostex and Denons and such before them are basically my only truly bassy over ears because I like to have a solid bassy option available. And yeah, audio time is several times faster than regular time. Kinda like dog years lol!

jbcalbears5150lol oh yeah I can totally see what you mean about the mids, though I think ear pad helps a lot. Smaller ear hole = more mids. So the stock big hole TH900 earpad is bound to have sucked out mids. And yes I remember Teak being the Fostex with the most mids. I just couldn't fix the vocal recession no matter what I did otherwise it would've been good. It's ok different trade off haha. Also different taste for different people so it's all good!

I love how they have the "RRP" as $299. I literally ordered a set of these from the Emu website, for $99,($20 shipping), just yesterday, literally(My amazing CAL!s recently passed on). I was actually a bit annoyed, when I got the email, because it implied(to me, anyway), that they were available for shipping. But, then I saw it was just a pre-order, for delivery around Thanksgiving. I was glad I already purchased them, as I will have them on my head before the pre-order ends in 7 days. lol I just have to shake my head and laugh at Drop, more often than not. Especially, since they dropped the "mass". I just don't understand it, anymore. Why would anyone wait over 3 months, for something they want, just to MAYBE, save a few bucks. I can't imagine anyone would choose to save 20 bucks, and wait so long, they had forgotten they even ordered them, when it comes. Rather than pay roughly the same, and have then in a couple days. I guess the surprise factor, would be pretty cool. But, I would still remember I ordered them "way back in summer", after opening the box. I can't fool myself very long. Even though, I have to do the math to remember how old I am, sometimes... It's like I'm watching a company intentionally trying to bankrupt itself. Such a silly business strategy, this has become, in my opinion.

Basically, the only difference, is the wood cups, instead of plastic, on the CAL!'s. But, they sound virtually identical. Same drivers, same exact build, ect. They probably sound a bit warmer, and overall better, than the clackity CAL! build. But, that difference is not audible to me. Just the same bio-cellulose goodness, I got from the CAL!. The E-mu's mainly look and feel higher quality. But, looking closely, they are the same OEM design, down to the short 3ft. attached cord. But, I highly recommend, them, especially for the price! E-mu sent them via DHL, from Singapore, and I had them, in the US, 5 days, or so, after shipping. It was about a week from placing my order, to having them, in hand. I was impressed. I hope this helps..

shkdwnstOh it's just generally speaking plastic cup vs wood cup will change sound (different resonant properties). Since it's proven in TH-X00 Mahogany/Purpleheart/Ebony that different wood changes tonality. Was curious to the sound difference but you said it's not audible to you right? Or was it not noticeable unless you A/B them side by side? Otherwise yeah the Walnut version do look more appealing to me lol.

Shazb0tNo, there was. I saw it when he first posted it, there was a seller who was taking backorders @ $39.99. They're no longer listed, so they've probably taken all the backorders they want to at this time.

Curious in general, but for these specifically...Does the use of Walnut wood make a tonal difference in playback? Guitarists always speak about different tone-wood theories (mahogany-dark, cedar-light tone) I'm curious if a similar principle is considered with headphones? What are your thoughts? Can anyone confirm/deny?
Yes I eagerly await to see how far you are willing to take your trolling and apparently the answer is even when you are proven wrong you are willing to continue even being diminished to the point of not being able to say anything other than insults in response
maybe you should finish learning English before you post here is a free lesson for you argument definition - an exchange of diverging or opposite views guess what that's what this entire discussion has been I hope you fix whatever is wrong with your life that's making you shit-post online and attack people for proving you wrong :)
