you better have a really damn good room if you use these, down-firing woofer + that tweeter that looks like if fires backwards as well.

QwervyIt's an AMT tweeter and to me looks very much front firing. Only the 2nd woofer is down-firing and assuming it's more like a 2.5 way design vs straight 2 way, the downward firing 2nd woofer isn't an issue. Carpet may not be the best surface for this particular speaker but these design cues bother me less than the lack of details on design/specification. 40hz rated... at what threshold -3, -6, -10 db... pretty worthless without more info. Crossover points and whether or not it's a 2-way, 2.5 or 3-way crossover would also be nice.

ElectronicVicesi know its an AMT tweeter but looking at pictures online, it looks bi-directional. specs are pretty sketchy i agree.

I think that they are bi-directional... i know what AMT tweeters are but not all of them are bi-directional

QwervyI mistook that line for meaning only rear firing... you may be on point on the bi-directional "free-air" AMT. Still more concerned over the specs and low power handling but it does seem to be pretty sensitive.

ElectronicVicesAhh, ok i thought the "as well" was clear enough, my mistake. inconsistency in frequency response can still sound good if its done correctly. I also personally dont care too much about power handling as long as it doesnt need said power. A good sensitivity and low impedance curve will satisfy most volume needs

QwervyPaper cones with a low power handling could mean they aren't very stiff and the voice coils not very beefy... slight red flag for long term durability for me. I'm also a bit of a sealed speaker fan so low sensitivity and high power handling lead me to some pretty beefy amps that would be wasted on something like this.

ElectronicVicesah, I'm the complete other way. I make my own speakers and i like to experiment with using lots of drivers which leads to a high control factor and sensitivity which allows me to further experiment with porting and fancy bandpass box designs. I also like to be able to run lower power tube amps cause they are cheaper and easier to mod. I disagree with your question of long term durability as it depends on the power that you are wanting to give them, at rated power its a question of build quality. The best guitar amps use speakers with tiny voice coils and really large thin cones. Either way if the drivers dont suit later down the track you could always upgrade/change them.

QwervyI agree these would probably be a good match with tube amps. With the design one could play around a lot with placement. Wanted to attempt a build myself but have not as of yet pulled the trigger. Still have my reservations on vague specs and what still see as a somewhat low max power rating. Zu Druids will hit concert levels sub 20 watts but is still rated for max power of 150 rms. Twere it 80 on this particular set I wouldn't have even given a 2nd thought.

ElectronicVicesyeah thats fair. Start with a full range speaker or subwoofer build first. it helps you get the general gist of it and then move on to 2- way builds increasing in complexity. there is a pretty strong learning curve if you have never done wood work. Also making your models in CAD really helps, I use FreeCAD cause its free and it does the job. Again if you have never used CAD well then maybe just stick to orthogonal drawings.

QwervyI had this brand before. Where did you get the idea that these tweeters fire backwards. These speakers are not omnidirectional. I will say that My memory has a fond place in my heart for the sound with vinyl. Having heard 4 different versions of Heils, I would say that this looks quite a bit like the ones I had on the speakers that I heard. The sounds is quick, strong and engaging. Ihad the 12 inch woofer on mine. Some people said there was a small disconnect between woofer and Heil. I never heard it. All I heard was pure music. The best part was the membrane that creates the sound is not very expensive and is replaceable. Even better they have sold these replacement membranes since 1977. With the price of the Heils on eBay, I don't think that these are overpriced at all. I promise you that no speaker company spends as much on the drivers as this speaker does. Most put $100 or so in 1000 speakers. Heck that's just the price of 1 Heil alone.

RotorooterIf you read the comments above fully you would have seen that I said bi-directional meaning that they fire both forwards and backwards. The nature of the design is that they are free-air drivers, meaning that the actual membrane doesn't have a box on one side meaning that sound is projected from both sides. I saw this physically online as you can basically see straight through the driver and to the other side. Also, where were we even talking about price at all in these comments? We were talking about making speakers...

QwervyI know what bi directional is. I've had many speakers that were multidirectional. I have OM-6s sitting in the garage.. I also had the AMT Studio Version and it was not bi directional. No one said anything about using for building but I know several people that bought the old Heils and used to build custom ones.
