Just to be clear: this doesn’t have to plug into your computer and it picks up ambient audio? Or can it listen for audio playing over, say, computer headphones as well

Hey @gimpster. Thanks for the question.
This product does have a microphone that receives nearby sound but not from a headphone since the mic is unable to hear the sound in the headphone.
This product does not have to be plugged into your computer. Only a usb power cord is needed.

Does it just pick up ambient audio or does it connect to your computer or other sound device. Ex. I am playing games on my computer with a wired headset. There is no ambient noise, does it do anything?

Ambient audio via microphone input only. In your example, it would analyze room noise or do nothing; not ideal, I know.
