So wait ... THIS doesn't have full tone control either?
It's like most (not all thankfully) Chinese restaurants. They make the food cheap and generic and people still buy the food. FiiO seems to have done the same with their line. Man am I glad I bought two E17 ALPENs a few years back ... still the best!
Actually that's all an exaggeration. I suspect the hardware quelity is comparable today as to the past. My issue is the path they've taken with the software. Seriously, why did FiiO do away with full bass & treble. I never don't use it.
m8omanThis is intended for use with Android phones... the vast majority of players already have EQ built in so basic tone controls would be quite redundant and only increase cost. I personally would take this over the E17 any day (if the purpose was phone use). The E17 is more versatile but also more colored in tonality.

ElectronicVicesIronically, my Samsung Note 3 streams over USB otg to my E17 out of the box. Original firmware. Argument can be made this model is the redundant one, imo , given the higher cost but less features. -lol.
All this is moot. E17 Alpen is no longer sold. (hope it is understood I am NOT talking about what is named the E17K of today, which I also would no longer buy) Been streaming to my E17 over spdif from a D3 dap for years. Full tone control in the analog domain is great to have.
Used to be a fiio fan. Don't like what they did with their dac/amps last few years.
m8omanpulled my e18 out of the drawer. whats the best way to use the spdif connection with a note 8?
