@WinkeylessThen probably it's not the set for you! Removing all the marketing aspects like the history, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, custom colors, prices etc, the main things that appeal to me are the beautiful teal colorway, high quality thick ABS from GMK, cherry fonts, cherry profile. And of course the non-aesthetic stuff like its future rarity and for it to be part of my collection. It's not everyday that the stars align, so for me, this set is almost as perfect as it can get.

@Winkeylessit is tough to explain how something is considered beautiful but let me try from my point of view at least:
- being a GMK already defaults it ahead of any non GMK sets - the worn out, yellowing of the modifiers gives it a classic vintage look - the contrast between the teal modifiers and the darker blue of the alphas gives out an unintentional "pop" - the history/rarity of the original keyboard itself.
TLDR: it's a freakin classic unique vintage GMK!

casperit was an honest question and this is one of the reasons why i was skeptical at first that this buy would reach 500 MOQ even with mass drop. i expected most of the users here to be more attracted with the simpler types like pure blacks, pure whites or deep contrasts like reds, oranges and razer greens.
i know that TA has such a huge prestige among serious keyboard enthusiasts but i did not expect the mainstream keyboard users to appreciate its beautry right off the bat.

ummidI think the reason this is doing so well (beyond it's awesomeness) is because of the extraordinary marketing effort Intelli has done. The amount of awareness that was raised in enthusiast communities outside of Massdrop to alert people to the upcoming buy drove the users here. I'm sure MD got a bunch of new users based solely on this drop.
I would agree that in general, this would not likely to be the type drop to attract very many typical MD users. That is not a knock against those people at all, as I too have purchased many things from here. It is just that "vintage" anything is not something you normally see in the keyboarding section of MD.

Once you have actual GMK's in your hands and they are installed into your favourite keyboard then we'll see if they still want to keep their PBT's.
Have numerous BSP sets and I still love the GMK's over them any day of the week. I don't get why there is this STUPID comparison of PBT and ABS, trying hard to put down one or the other.
I personally prefer the GMK's because they have an imbedded Font within the plastic that is so deep compared to BSP's dye-subbed application, so when you wear out both over a period of decades the GMK's will still show a clear, easily read font or number whilst the BSP's would be worn away over time.

ElrickI think the comparison between the two comes from people assuming all ABS sets feel like the cheap thin plastic they get with mass produced keyboards. They relate thick and PBT together so they assume PBT will always be better.

ElrickYes of course, my point is that you can love lemons while still enjoying apples. ABS and PBT don't have the exact same properties. Correct me if I'm wrong, but even GMK ABS has a smooth texture. A lot of people enjoy the somewhat rugged texture of PBT.
(Rugged probably isn't the best word to describe it)

WhalesI guess the main point here is that have to at least have tried everything from your perspective to develop a preference. A lot of people enjoy PBT, a lot of people enjoy ABS, a lot of people developed their preference from the comments of others, a lot of people do not really care about the difference, and the list goes on and on..
It's not what others prefer, and the amount of other people that prefer something, it's your own preference that really counts.

WhalesAnd one thing about PBT is that the colors appear to be more washed out, making them more suited for the pastel colorways. You can try comparing the CtrlAlt Miami ABS sets against the Tai-Hao Miami PBT sets, there's is a noticeable difference in the vibrancy and contrast of colors. Again, it's a preference as to which is more appealing.

ummidPBT is much more accessible, so that's always going to be true. I fully support trying both, I'm just saying pbt has qualities that people may prefer over abs.

Whalestaste is personal but i would suggest you try gmk first and you'll experience what the hype is all about. the only thing that could match the gmk experience is bsp pbt imo but since i use an hhkb layout, it's hard to find those keysets on bsp's.

WhalesNot all PBT sets are created equal: they all have different thickness, textures, and height profiles. Just like you can't compare GMK to the rice paper thin caps on a Novatouch - don't compare 1.5mm thick PBT on the Leopold to KBC PBT.
Sure we all have our preferences [mine is POM] but lets stop drinking the kool-aid by eliminating an entire plastic material type because one set of PBT caps you tried didn't jive with you.

everyusernametakenI use blank black keycaps exclusively so I never look at the keyboard anyway, key feel is more important than cosmetics/aesthetics for me.
The problem I have with ABS is it tends to show signs of wear (go smooth and shiny) inside of 12 months and I got tired of replacing my keycaps annually.
I personally prefer PBT because I don't want/need legends/rainbow colors/backlit keys etc, and I just prefer keycaps that can maintain texturing on their faces.

I found another original TA set on KeyChatter with darker alphas than what's shown on Massdrop. It's probably due to difference in aging. Just curious: what are the colors of this GMK replica? Will the alphas be lighter or darker? Are they match any of the color codes here: http://www.keycapsdirect.com/abscolors.php

@WinkeylessBoth that photo and the photos on Massdrop are Photoshopped to approximate what GMK will make. Any difference between the two is unintentional. Please keep in mind it is IMPOSSIBLE to judge real-life colors based on a computer screen, especially an uncalibrated display.

@WinkeylessAlso do bear in mind, our shots are of a beige keyboard on a black background, and those shots are of a dark grey keyboard on a light background. Comparing those two pictures that have completely different lighting requirements won't give you an accurate color reference.

Silent Holy Panda X?

I ordered some Holy Panda X switches, and I fell in love with them. They are a joy to type on. There's just one problem. The place that I use my keyboard to type the most is obviously at work, which is a problem if I want to use the Holy Panda X in the office around a whole bunch of people. I really don't want to torture my coworkers with the clack of these switches. I'd rather they still liked me. The good news is that, for me, the actuation of the Holy Panda X is the best part. I could take or leave the sound it makes; even if it is fantastic. Which leads me to my conundrum: is there another "silent" switch that feels similar to the Holy Panda X? Is there a piece I can remove from the Holy Panda X that would allow me to make them silent? Or am I going to have to wait and see if Drop will drop a Silent Holy Panda X for the in-office mech community?
