This is cool, but I started warning folks against using this type of lens as a spin surface after one of my tops got really dinged up on one.
The problem is that the upper (and bottom) rim of the lens is rough, unpolished glass with one cut bevel. That results in a rough and slightly sharp edge on the rim.
If the top stays on the spin surface the whole time, then all is well.
But if you make a wild spin and the top shoots towards the edge and then falls off the surface, then that rough, unpolished, slightly sharp upper rim can damage your top once the bearing falls off the edge.
What happens is that once the bearing drops off the edge, the rapidly spinning weighted body of the top then drops onto the sharp glass edge, and bounces multiple times as it continues to spin and bounce off the rim.
This happened to my Vorso MK1, and I ended up with about 7 or 8 evenly spaces small gouges or nicks around the bottom edge of the brass disc, covering about 3/4 of the circumference of the top.
Let me repeat - a bunch of very noticeable nicks on what was previously an unblemished, perfect top costing $75! Damn!
If someone is offering a spin surface consisting of one of these lenses, they need to offer some sort of raised base that this lens can nest into, or a protective rubber bumper that covers the sharp, hard upper rim.
So that a rapidly spinning top leaving the lens cannot drop onto that edge and nick it in multiple spots as it continues to spin.
So while this looks cool, the unprotected lens has real potential to damage your tops.
Edit:
Please reference the photo of the Vorso MK1 spinning on top of the lens in the product description.
Visualize the top moving to the right, and then the bearing leaving edge of the lens. Gravity drops the top straight down and the body of the top impacts the upper edge of the lens.
Because the top is spinning so rapidly, it bounces numerous times on the glass edge before bouncing off for good. That is how the damage happens.
It's very easy to visualize when you look at the picture.
Remember, the glass is very hard and also sharp - perhaps harder than the brass top, if more brittle as well.
Sigh. Another base with a really tiny spin surface. Wish someone would sell a 5" piece of glass with decent concave. Something that isn't a bathroom mirror...

I see these tops and accessories often on here. What is the allure? Why do people spend hundreds on items such as these? Is there a draw or mystique I'm not aware of?

Agreed. I didn't mean to come across if I was demeaning the collecting or use of, if it came out that way.
Instead, I was really just trying to discover if there was something I didn't know about them. For instance, drones entice me immensely, but I was blind to the entire racing side until recently and couldn't figure out why people would want small, fast, lower-rez camera options. But then I found out. I figured it might be the same here and just wondered where that niche market sprung up from.
Thanks for all the answers- @l3xm4rk @Rashkh
