I just purchased the MD+ IEMs and need a bit of help. I have the Radsone ES100 which is all I expect to drive the MD+ with until I upgrade to a nice headphone DAC in the future. Currently I am using the included 3.5mm cable using the single ended Dual drive (2x current) mode. ( I have a 2.5mm balanced cable from Massdrop on the way.) Here is what I need help with:
  1. When I am trying to set the ES100 to make sure I don’t damage my ears the sound level seems very low.
  2. The ES100 app has a section for setting the Impedance and the Sensitivity. I have used 10 ohm and 109 dB SPL/mW. Is that correct? Or am I mis-translating the specs to these input values?
  3. I set the max volume at 85 dB. Does that seem reasonable? Should I expect this to be a volume where I can hear every aspect of the music I am listening to?
  4. Is the ES100 up to the task to driving these IEMs?
  5. The ES100 technically defines a headphone impedance of something like 18-600 ohms.
  6. The MD+ are 10 ohms. So I know that technically under the limit but should it be roughly ok? Would the impedance difference explain the volume issues in #1.
  7. I was going to use the balanced instead of the unbalanced input to the IEMs. But it isn’t obvious to me if this will actually be better. Because of the low impedance the higher current mode might be better than the high voltage mode? I dunno.
  8. I want to make sure that I know the settings to flatten the response of the MD+ (If and when I want to. I know that I can just roll with the natural response of them.) Do I just invert the measured frequency response of the MD+ shown on the site and use that?
  9. How do I get the best out of my MD+ ?
  10. Just a general question regarding accessories or care or whatever else
I am really excited about these and just trying to make sure I am using them in the best way without hurting myself or them.

DdcrHi Ddcr I just got them and am using a LCX amp Se for now and plan to use balanced connection once I get an adapter. All I know is they sound great and hopefully I can improve with different tips etc. You might want to read this thread and maybe join their forum just read their guide lines before you start posting though. https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/massdrop-plus-iem.5196/ Head-fi is a friendlier environment. https://www.head-fi.org/threads/massdrop-plus-universal-iem.862099/

DdcrI wondered about balanced as a opposed to unbalanced, but you might read this comment from Cee_Tee and his conversation with the designer of the Liquid Carbon. I am using a Grace M9XX for a DAC but plan to get their balanced DAC when it drops again. But just as pads are important for over the ear tips are important for iems. https://www.massdrop.com/buy/76275/talk/2195161

DdcrThe ES100 is just fine with driving this IEM or any others in general. And while they can list your listening level, it's very off so I wouldn't use that as a gauge whatsoever. I use an SPL meter to get close and even then, they aren't the most accurate of devices due to how sound is perceived in the actual ear canal. But, it can provide a good baseline. I listen at that level, 80-85 dB as it's just preference. But that tends to be in spurts and dependent on music choice for the day and where I am (home, office, etc.). Some prefer to listen at lower volumes. There isn't a right or wrong answer as your anatomy will determine where you need to listen to get max enjoyment. Just take some time to listen to the same tracks at varying levels and see what you prefer. Again, this will just be your baseline. For some genres, I turn it up louder compared to others (music from the 60s compared to modern pop). In terms of care, wrapping the cable around your hand loosely will be enough to have it last a long time. Be sure to wipe down you tips once or twice a month with water and let them air dry. Unless you have moist ears or make a lot of wax, that should be all you need. Make sure they are stored in their case and otherwise, that should be it. Avoid drops and falls as even the smallest knock can unsettle the drivers inside. Going balanced in general yields more power to help the amp from working too hard and nearing it's ceiling so you don't get any clipping. Sometimes, balanced offers less noise over SE but that will vary by device and implementation. These are easy to drive IEMs and you'll deafen yourself before you get this amp to it's upper limit. Really that's it. I can't comment on EQ as that's so subjective and I like the MD+ as is without changes. I'm sure there are others that could offer advise there.
