Product Description
The first in-ear monitor tuned by Massdrop from the ground up, the Plus features a novel sound signature that combines aspects of a number of community-favorite IEMs. With three Sonion balanced-armature drivers per ear, it delivers extended bass, clarity, and a sound that leans toward full and fun ... Hitting the Balance Point… Which one? As many as possible! Happy Path: My personal history is that I rediscovered headphone listening in 2009, organized local meets, became the Ultimate Ears Ambassador to Head-Fi.org for a time, and now I get to work with audiophile gear every day at Massdrop. Not-Very-Audiophile Confession: What led me to Head-fi.org was spotting a cool-looking pair of shiny headphones on someone at an airport in Japan and wanting to buy a pair. I never did find out what that exact pair of headphones was, but I did find a great new headphone. My next super audiophile move was to…buy some HiFiMAN RE-0 in-ear monitors. Loved them but yanked too hard on the cable and lost the left channel. Shopping around for a replacement, I decided to try for extra bass since some people thought the RE-0 were a bit “bass-light”. (Bass insecurity is a thing.) I proceeded to overdo it by buying the Sennheiser IE8 (clublife) and then vowed to go for a neutral monitor. Not too bright, not too bassy, can I find “just right”??? Everyone who knows me in the community knows that I am a big Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor (UERM) fan. I got one of the first pairs as soon as they released and still love them to this day. Many of us think that sound signature is one of the very best and if you had to choose just one headphone or IEM, that would easily be a top 5 pick. The UERM signature plus some sub-bass is fairly viewed as a vision for the “perfect” reference monitor. But would that be the “perfect listening monitor” for most people? Many of us UERM owners have the desire for a complimentary IEM. One that is a bit more lush in the low end in addition to extending lower. We started this project with the goal of making the perfect reference monitor. We started with a base tuning similar to the Etymotic ER4SR and Ultimate Ears Reference Monitor. Then we looked to add the sub-bass extension. And we really wanted to keep the price to $299.99 so it would be affordable to more people. After a year and a half of experimenting, we got to the point where we achieved elevated but flat bass from the upper bass to the sub-bass with a very clear, flat, and connected midrange (except for a nice little dip in the annoying sibilance region and an extra bump in the presence region to balance the bass). We’re all at the Rocky Mountain Audio Festival in Colorado right now, where Jude Mansilla from Head-fi.org has organized a big CanJam event. As soon as possible, we’ll get some graphs up on the page. The graphs will show elements of today’s best monitors in the Plus frequency response and the sound has been subjectively described as very musical, clear and fun, with no annoying peaks. It’s a lot of sound, but I can turn ‘em up and not get fatigued. There’s rumble while watching movies but super clear dialog. This balance of driver characteristics, price, performance, technicalities, flat response, fun sound, and frequency range extension made us freeze this design. If you HAD to only pick one in-ear monitor or headphone, we hope this would be in your top picks…at any price.

How is this compared to UE900 or s? The price point is similar or UE900s is lower in some market.

It trumps the UE900s in pretty much every way. IMO UE900/s really hasn't been competitive for a pretty long time. I suppose if you can get it for like <$200 it's ok. It also had a fair amount of build quality issues. I have not directly compared the MD+ to UE900/S but I'd pick the MD+ over a lot of IEMs that I picked over UE900 before (think Westones, older hybrids like Dunu/Fidue). I also remember that the UEs had recessed upper mids, opposite of the MD+ so that might be good or bad depending on your preference.

The cable is truly garbage and I lost sound in about a month should I bother asking massdrop for a refund or a new cable or just go buy one for third party?

Do contact massdrop about this, however, I don't think massdrop does much in terms of warranty and support. In other words you're probably just gonna have to buy a new cable.

I believe that these use a 0.78mm 2 pin terminal (not to be confused with 0.75mm 2 pin). So you're best bet would to find some audio cable company and get a custom made cable. Some examples are null audio, alo (though I'm not sure if they offer 0.78mm), moon-audio, nocaudio, etc.

I'm quite interested in (and curios about) these but I'm also quite concerned about the reported breakages ... the nozzles breaking off has been reported as an issue by more than one. has anything been done to address/ fix that?

Has anyone found these to be a bit buzzy or clippy during powerful vocals? I can listen to certain music and they sound perfect but for instance during Adele's “Hello” they buzz and clip her vocals during the chorus. This happens both through a Fiio DAC and an iPad’s analog headphone jack so it’s not my DAC creating the distortion. I’m next going to search for my 3.5 mm to 1/4” converter and try my Schiit DAC/ amp combo to see if my the buzzing and clipping happens when my pc is supplying the music. Im trying to determine if these iems should be exchanged under warranty.

This just began happening to me too after having them for about a year, but just in the right ear bud. I was actually wondering if there was a way to get that earbud repaired because I believe this mean's that something's broken in the earbuds and not that the earbuds are supposed to be like this. If I blast "powerful" vocals in my left earbud it seems to be fine.

Howdy! I’m super interested in these, but I plan on using them in the gym and I’m curious about their water/sweat proof rating, if any. Can anyone shed some light on how they handle moisture? Thank you!

If you already wear IEM's while working out then these should work fine.

WARNING! The quality of the shells is not up to snuff. My right one broke after 3 months of use in normal daily usage of just inserting and taking away from my head, stored inside a soft case. I suspect that the plastic resin used in the 3D printing is not very strong. My left IEM shell broke when inserting the tip into my ear canal, so very little force was applied. I definitely would NOT buy these again, unless they've retooled the shell and upped the warranty to 2 years. There are just way more sturdy and proven reliable alternatives at this price range. Don't get me wrong, I like the sound quality, but reliability for everyday use is not good enough. YMMV.

These do come with a 1 year warranty so I'd check back with massdrop about your options assuming your still within that time period.

Have you tried custom cables from companies like null audio? For example, the Ethos Plus from null audio has a mic option. Some other options you could check out are moon audio, nocaudio, etc.

Actually yes I do! I have a spare right in very good condition. Its mate met a very unfortunate demise under my foot. I already ordered a replacement set, so I would be willing to part with it to recoup some money.
