Sennheiser PC37X randomly goes bad after disconnecting the cable ?
Greetings, Yesterday I was using my headset like normal with my macbook, just listening to music and on a call with people like usual, and the headset was perfectly fine. The stock wire that came with the headset is extremely long and yesterday it annoyed me very much that it kept getting tangled with itself, so I decided to see if the cable is replaceable. I pulled out the cable from the headset and saw the adapter, and looked online for a replacement. Upon plugging it back in, the audio sounded extremely muffled and washed out. Im not sure what I did wrong to make it mess up like that as I've always taken good care of it, ive had it for about 2 years and its always just been chilling on my desk, but anywho I thought the cable just went bad and ordered a replacement. The replacement came, and the issue is still persistant, so I am not sure what the issue is I've tried multiple different headsets and the issue is not with the port, and I also tried it with my windows laptop and...

This move from massdrop or sennheiser has caused the 6xx to be purchased for the collectors value in it, that this headphone is a exclusive version of the 650s. However, the problem is that this headphone is not superior to the 650, it is inferior. In terms of build quality and sound quality, the 6xx does not match the 650. The build quality of the 6xx is very inferior to the 650s, and while the sonic signatures may be similar, the frequency response does not match the 650s exactly, and some users have been claiming that the sonic qualities of the 6xx is inferior to the 650.
At amazon's current list price of the 650s at $300, its a no-brainer to get the 650 instead of the 6xx. You dont have to spend a century waiting for your headphones to ship, and you get the sound quality the 650s are known for and the superior build quality of the 650s. Not a inferior version of a pair of popular headphones with intensely long waiting times.
I really didn't want to do this, but this is a fine example on how corporations can destroy an excellent value of a pair of exclusives due to their inability to maintain fair prices. I would have bought these headphones if not for the unreasonable price hike, if the price went up by $10-20, I could understand. But $50? I'm afraid no. Comparison with HD650 stock Massdrop 6XX = Yellow HD650 = Orange
So please, save your hyperbole for something more substantial than that.
The $50 price hike is a fair enough point, if you're able to get the HD650 at that $300 price point. This is likely a nod to international buyers, where shipping in itself is around $50 or more - especially for those of us in countries where retailers at no point offer the HD650's at MSRP. For example, over here in Malaysia, you're lucky to get an HD650 for anything less than $450.
Inferior build quality at a 25% price hike without shipping? No.
For the frequency response aspect, you may not hear the difference but some people have commented that they felt the HD 6xx was inferior to the HD 650 on tuning, for the fact that it seems to have a sound signature between the 650 and the 600s. Im not exactly sure about that point, so best if you do your own research.
I personally heard the hd 600s and 650s and wrote a comparison between them, different tuning with different tones. Lushness of the mids is completely different. On the 650s the focus on the mids, on the 600s it is much more balanced. Abing between them at first I was unable to tell them apart, but long term listening of each headphone and within a hour, I managed to hear the overall difference on tone.
Thus a 6xx with is sig in between the 600s and the 650s may not sound as expected.
But my agenda is clear. I comment for the people, and call massdrop and sennheiser out on their ridiculous price hike. BTW, the original drop+ shipping was still cheaper than this drop alone eh?
I don't like being negative towards products, especially after massdrop went through all that effort to get a second drop for us. But the point of the second drop is to match the value of the first drop, we the people here on massdrop want cheaper products with great value, which is why we are willing to wait and compromise certain aspects of quality.
But if the drops are ridiculous and the original product fairs better than the exclusive product, there is practically no point in buying from massdrop.
No. I cannot recommend the 6xx at this price point.
I would love to speculate on why massdrop hiked the price up, but I'm not even clear on why they did so other than sennheiser only allowed them to sell at this price.
So it is either: 1.Massdrop is greedy and wants more money 2. Sennheiser is afraid that the 6xx will cannibalize sales of the 650 and thus only allows massdrop to sell at this price (very likely)
Its about time people stopped being protective of massdrop and the low-value drops. They are a corporation, out to make money, so if there is no win-win solution between us, there will be no trade.
No. The 6xx is not a high value exclusive. Not recommended at $250.
My LCD 3 and LCD 2 stand head and shoulders above it - not a fair comparison, for sure. My Sine and PM-3 are a bit closer in price, $500 & $400 respectively, and they trounce the HD650s on transparency and every other aspect too. I even prefer my DT880 Pro, lacking in finesse and resolution they may be, yet still managing to be substantially more exciting than the HD650 and HD600.
I only came here because I happen to be in the market for a pair of headphones for my wife. She can only comfortably wear the DT880 Pro but they don't really suit her sound preference.
The frequency graph is close enough that even at $250 the massdrop version is a good deal. Maybe the material quality difference is a big deal, but I've demoed HD650s and they were never that high in build quality. Even HD800s at $1k or HD800S at $1.6k still have generally poor build quality. Sennheiser has poor build quality in general. Great sound, but the materials they use always seem cheap and the paint always chips off.
He400i now offers excellent value for the price, is easy to drive (unlike the 650s which can be pretty power hungry)
No point in getting a massdrop exclusive and you have to get a freight forwarder and pay taxes also.
Hello, no one needs a commenter like you not contributing towards the community, from what I see all you comment on this page about is about how you triumphed all of us and got a pair of massdrop headphones when the servers were crashing and now mocking us at being unable to get the original deal of $200.
See, people like you breed on the sensation of putting people down and watching them get agitated by your immature comments of how you triumphed against us just because you got a pair of headphones. Its like a kid saying that he is better than an adult just because he got his toy car that the adult never managed to get. You hold a exceptionally immature view on how a person is better than the other.
My comments are for the people, to ensure that they can spend their hard earned money wisely, while you comment to agitate people and make them feel horrible.
Pathetic, isnt it? That you have so little things to gloat about that you have to result to making people feel horrible about missing a drop. ITS TIME TO STOP CARK!
I don't want to waste my breath on a kid probably trying to drive his "expensive audiophile headphones" from a phone with absolutely zero audio knowledge. This pair of headphones driven unproperly is worse than $10 headphones LOL. Cause there is no sound HAHA LOL
Its like you bought a toy just to gloat at the others that don't have it and you don't even know how to use it.
What a joke.
Personally, don't take words describing sound at face value because words really can't describe sound.
Its would be best to go down to your local audio shop and test out the headphones.
I personally didn't find the HD 650s exciting, but they were very relaxing headphones. Just imagine you hear mainly the lush mids in a song with a bit of a bass bloat. Highs are slightly veiled when compared to brighter headphones.
HE 400i would still be a better option for the buck as it has a low impedance, thus making it easier to be driven. A HD 650 with its 300 ohm impedance needs an expensive portable amp or a decent desktop amp to shine, while pairing the he 400i with something like the fiio e17k will do wonders.
Let me put it this way, out of all the 5000 who managed to get the 6XX, only ONE person is being a cunt about it and laughing at everyone else who didn't manage to get it, making it sound like we're all poor and lazy for not getting lucky enough to buy it.
Can you guess who that one person is?
I won't be able to get in on this drop myself, because I will be commuting to work, or starting my workday. I have more important things to worry about than saving $50 in 6 months for a pair of headphones. I can literally spend the money for an LCD-4 if I wanted, although I probably won't because I think that's too much money. But it's not from a lack of being able to afford it so much as the sense not too (probably why I have money in the first place).
I'm mostly eyeballing the Campfire Audio Andromedas to be honest, those looks really promising.
Firstly the 400i treble is slightly elevated as can be see in their frequency graphs, I love planar bass but it's not overly impressive with this particular model and the mids are not similar to the 650s at all (less lush and mellow, personal whether or not that's a good thing).
Secondly the 650s scale almost infinitely whilst the 400i do not - the 400i sounded practically the same of my $300 iFi DAC/amp as they did out of my Schiit Gungnir Multibit ($1200) + Pathos Aurium ($1500), Woo WA7, Schiit Mjolnir 2, etc. The 650s are completely different out of all of those even though they are not the most transparent sounding transducers either.
What happens is that the veil is lifted almost completely, the sound stage is widened (especially with tubes, for obvious reasons) and the bass that's usually pretty subdued with cheaper amplification has actual impact and hits hard.
PS: I actually rather the sound of the 400S over the 400i but that's purely because I prefer smoother sounding headphones over sparklier ones. The 400i are clearly better for classical ensembles for example but that's not something I really listen to.
