Can someone explain me how the HD 58X compares to the original HD 598 ?
I've had the HD 598 for years (which needs to be replaced) and i was wondering if it was worth changing for the HD 58X.
I don’t understand why so many people are comparing these HD58X to the HD598. For the same reason I wouldn’t compare the pleasure of driving a VW Golf to a Porsche 911, although built by the same manufacturing group... yes all comparisons are bad, but you get the idea... I own the HD598. I rarely use them, especially since I got my first pair of 600 series Senns. The HD598 are close to be boring, bassless (and i’m not a bass head by any means). When at home I alternate between HD600, HD6XX and HD58X, all of them are performers. When on the move I use either my Amperior, HD25-1II or my Bluetooth headphones (el cheapo but handy HD4.40 or my too expensive HD1 wireless, both good but too bassy). The HD598 is a boring VW, the poor man’s Porsche...just good for watching TV, the only difference here is that the HD6Xx and HD58X are very affordable... so you know what you should be doing... go for them!
the soundstage for these is a bit smaller but clearer overall. I do believe these are in a whole new different league.
I agree, I have both a pair of the normal 598 and the closed backs and even on the closed back version the bass is extremely anemic. Been loving the 58Xs so far.
i replaced my HD598s with the HD58X for my work headphones since i dont have an amp setup here like at home. I just A/B these headphones out of curiosity since i havent listened to them since i received my 58Xs. The differences are hard to put into words. I never found the 598s to sound very good personally but they were comfy for a long work day, and im just going to keep it simple..it is a night and day difference in sound quality, across the board improvement.
The HD598 are comfortable, non-agressive to listen to for long periods. They have a wide imaging soundstage. Therefore they are a very good choice for TV or home series or movie watching. That‘s about it for its qualities. For music, skip the HD598 and go for a 600 series headphone instead, and I won’t suggest a model in particular, although I have a preference, but it really depends on your taste, preference and the type of music you listen to. I give a strong recommendation to the HD58X, HD600 and HD650/HD6XX. As for the HD660S, well to be honest I haven’t had the chance to hear them yet, but overall the many reviews and many comments I’ve read on them really make me add them to this list.
