These look more like showpieces or a gift for that special someone who appreciates the finer things in life who needs a stylish wooden keyboard to go with their elegant wood-paneled office in their 20-room mansion. Or it could be part of a set of props for a professional photographer who is always on the lookout to create innovative and eye-catching stock photos he can sell for big bucks. I see potentials here, but unfortunately not for a practical working keyboard because of questions about how wood would hold up under long-term heavy use. Still, I'm tempted to buy one because it simply looks beautiful.
I was, I am totally serious. I pretend to do a little wood working and I have watched many species disappear from the market over the last 40+ years. In the time it will take me to finish typing this comment, acres (yes, plural) of rainforest will be gone. I weep for the future of my species.
Yeah they missed an opportunity by not adding like 5 extra keys that would fit like 75% of the keyboards their potential customers own. This is beyond lame.
As nice as this is, why didn't they recognize that most people want different layouts?
Is a 1.75 unit shift and a 1 unit "0" key and a couple others THAT much harder to add to the kit?
... Wasted potential. Cant fit a standard 65, cant fit a 96 key, only 60, tkl and full? Is this 2012?
I didn't say anything about the wood part of it. Centered legends (on non-SA, MT3, DSA, etc) and OEM profile are usually found on cheap Amazon garbage caps. I would expect top-left legends and cherry profile at this price point.
copper_waspWoosh.
OEM and centered legends on WOOD, would be expensive.
The biggest failure of this kit is the lack of layout options. The price reflects the material. I don't see how cherry profile and off centered engraving would justify it more so.
I have a Preonic on the way but if these key caps had an ortholinear option I’d buy a Datamancer case and another PCB just to make a “wooden” keyboard.
I can't imagine being able to execute small-tolerance wood caps reliably. Wood is not a good material for this purpose. I think this will work well for show pieces, but functionally will leave a lot to be desired simply because of the fundamental properties of wood. Wood novelties, or a single key like a wooden space bar would likely "work" a lot better, I imagine.
I'd love to be wrong, but my skepticism is heavy.
SoulcutterI too share the same worry. Especially I did some woodworking too, unless they seal the wood really well and capable to withstand long term use. Typing on them would eventually "sand" down the sealing layer and expose the wood to the moisture. While these are smaller pieces, the wood movements are small, there is still potential that some of the key may not hold on to the switches once you wore down the sealing layer.
SurafoxkusuOne problem with many flavors of rosewood is that their composition is mostly impervious to man's feeble attempts to stabilize them. All penetrating stabilizers I have tried neither penetrate nor stabilize.
