When in Nepal I found yak wool products scratchy, though that may have been due to quality. Can anyone comment on this?
clewMost of the "yak" wool products in Nepal are actually acrylic or some other synthetic fiber. If they are real yak wool it is likely that the quality is very low and that is why it would feel scratchy. Yaks have a different fibers on their body (the long, coarse stuff that you can see, some shorter fiber similar to hair or other animals, and fine fiber that is somewhere between merino and cashmere in terms of softness. In Nepal they have very little ability to separate out the good fiber from the bad and the result is terrible. If you only use the soft, fine fiber then yak fiber is much, much softer and less scratchy than merino.

Where are these made?

Ethically sourced material.... then made in China. Isn't that a bit like buying free-range meat then deep frying it in endangered whale fat and a topping of foie grais?
ShenanigansI get what you are saying, but I think the perception that China is a giant sweat shop is not quite right anymore. While manufacturing in China can't be considered "ethical" there is a big difference between factories. We think we have chosen the right factories that meet the quality standards that we want, and also have decent working conditions and pay.

Just got my beanie and neck warmer today. Already love them. Really amazing deep navy blue colour. Tried them out for walk with the dogs in -3°C and they felt great. I agree with another member that the inner tag is sewn very low, only allowing you a few centimetres of material to cuff. The Yak wool seems to have a much softer feel than Merino - I quite like it. I hope the P2P Yak base layers show up here again soon.

gnarledcouleeI agree, averall good quality, my only complaint is the poor location of the inner label and the flimsy stitching of the outer label.. (wish the outer label was smaller, only on one side and stitched all sides) I’m considering removing both labels..

MassDrop, please be careful for these "bait and switch" deals where they offer too few items to your many customers, so the customers have to buy from another website at full price. It is just cheap advertising, which most companies would like. They probably make 60 beanies in 4 hours tops, and the discount price is still well over 600% markup. Overall, I always thought yak hair is a little too rough, and I will just stick to Turtle fur products, which has never let me down.

fishbite@fishbite - Thanks for your post, but I have to admit that I'm a bit confused by it. Please read through the drop page and the notes and let me know where we are switching you to a different product? It's actually pretty funny that you accused us of that, yet you're comparing this high end yak/merino piece to a mass-produced synthetic Turtle Fur.
It is quite unfortunate that we ran out of stock of the beanies, you're right. It's bad for us, the manufacturer, and our members. But you can't buy this product at another site - the world supply is literally sold out right now as we had it all reserved for this drop. We'll talk with Peak to Plateau about making more for us, but it will take weeks or months likely.
Finally, let's try to avoid speculation on markup and production time. Also, I'm not sure you can compare this ultrafine yak wool to the traditional rough yak wool that you've tried. That's like saying you don't like Icebreaker clothing because your grandfather's wool sweater from 60 years ago was itchy. I have the samples of the beanie and neckwarmer, and they're every bit as soft as modern 100% merino wool. I think you would be impressed.
This is an open forum, and I appreciate your point of view. And I am not picking on Turtle Fur as they do make some great products - we have talked to them about working with us. I am curious as to what yak wool products have you tried? I've only heard for Peak to Plateau and Kora (from Europe). Thanks again!

Can anyone give me dimensions of the neckwarmer? Specifically, I'm looking to see if it would be comparable to the size of a Buff.

Any possibility of increasing the amount beanies available? I wanted the neck warmer and beanie however the option for the beanies (and thus the combined offer) is unavailable
ZenwarriorUnfortunately not. Beanies are completely sold out.

I bought this neckwarmer because I heard that wool works while wet and also that yak wool is just softer. Well it sure is soft and easy to breath through when pulled over the face. Slight discomfort with face stubble as expected. I got my neckwarmer and used it on Sunday. I took it sailing. And as it happens, it was a super windy day and I capsized my boat and ended up in the water. Sure enough, this sucker kept my neck warm even while completely saturated with water.
How warm are these items compared to the standard scarf or something like a thick carhartt beanie? They appear thin, but I know that looks can be deceiving, especially with wool.
TheBeardedCakeasaurHi I am the founder of Peak to Plateau. They are thin enough to easily fit under a helmet, but are also very warm and have two layers of fabric. I personally find them as warm or warmer than other wool beanies that are much thicker.

I just received my beanie and neckwarmer today.
My first impressions: - Beautiful, highly saturated navy blue color. - Lightweight and about as thick as french terry fabric. - It still has a slight itch to it but is softer and more pleasant to wear than Icebreaker, Smartwool and Carhartt's 100% Acrylic hat. - With the beanie on and the neckwarmer pulled up over my nose, this is more comfortable than wearing a balaclava. It's nice to not look like a ninja in the city. - Tag on the beanie is sewn too low such that it shows when cuffing the brim. I'll probably cut it off.
Time will tell: - How well will the neckwarmer spring back into shape after being worn over my nose for extended periods. - How warm it will be when the temperature is below freezing when my breath dampens it. - How much pilling or pulls it may have with normal use.
Next steps: - I will order another beanie and neckwarmer since my son want this set. - I want to order their baselayers. - I'm looking forward to the socks from Kickstarter.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how well the beanie fits xl heads? One size fits all is very rarely true.
JeffGIt will fit XL heads well, there is good elasticity because of the type of knit. It is also long enough to still provide good coverage.
