After seeing our Mech Keys Community express interest in a marble wrist rest, we decided to turn dreams into reality. Our first official collaboration with Royal Glam, these heavy Massdrop-exclusive wrist rests are equal parts comfort and style Read More
Well, I was one of the lucky people to get an uncracked rest right out of the box. It even lasted a year (almost to the day) before finally giving way and cracking a long, sharp, crack along the space my right hand rests on. Would've been a great rest if it had just been marble. While binding it to wood gave it a better desktop look it proved to be too variable a baseplate for stone. As you can see from the discussions these rests have a lifespan and they were certainly not marketed as such. What hurts the most is the clear abandonment of the drop by the creator 'Kevin,' who was active in the discussions during the drop and quickly fled the scene after shipping the second or third batch. He either did not understand how to properly heat-treat and finish wood, or did not properly source wood he believed was suitable for mounting stone. No communication after a massive failure like this is why old people hate the internet, no accountability.
At least my wrists were cold for a year. 2/5 stay away from anything 'Royal Glam'
I absolutely adore mine. The beauty of the thing makes it well worth the expense. I had to leave a review after I saw the other two reviews because nothing could be further from my own experience. The marble and wood fit together seamlessly and the material both shine: nothing but smooth polished surfaces. My only regret is that I didn't get a second for my slightly larger (and now preferred) keyboard. Hopefully they will begin making more soon?
I'd avoid these as the QC on them was atrocious:
-they left the sharp edges after cutting the marble so they are all slightly chipped , and it only gets worse
-sizable chips in both my original and replacement black one
-epoxy all over the edge of the marble, and applied VERY inconsitently. On all 3 I've had the epoxy goes from paper thin to 1mm wide over the length of the board
-the wood on my white one has warped from the humidity and separated the epoxy from the wood or marble along the whole length in less than a week.
I STRONGLY suggest avoiding this drop until they can show definitive proof that the build quality isn't as bad as the first two runs were. I'll keep mine because I like them and I'm too lazy to deal with returning all 3 of them, but if you're not prepared to suck up some cosmetic damage stay away.
I love the look of it and the cool feeling on my wrist, but the thermal differential between the marble and the wood base has cause the wood to warp severely, breaking it away from the marble in places and forcing me to glue coins to the bottom to keep it from wobbling. Would have been better to do solid marble with a felt base or something.
Less forgivably, the green marble is fake. The green color comes off on the paper towel when you wash it. This has led me to, well, stop washing it...
WigdaddyIt's not caused by differences in thermal conductivity, it's caused by Royal Glam failing to properly treat the wood on any of their products so they absorb the moisture out of the air and warp significantly.
AthlonThanks for the info. I do have another wristrest from Royal Glam in solid walnut. I’ve had it for a few years now and it’s never warped. It does get stained by sweat very easily though. And weirdly, it sweats itself whenever the humidity goes up.
