BenTeoApparently the answer is no. Very disappointing.

chigonzoIs it? It’s not an android device, so I’m not sure why there would be an expectation that Spotify would run on the M5s. If you need Spotify, get an M11. By all accounts the additional cost is worth it.

PopZeusThat's fair, I just feel like they should all have that capability but that's just like, my opinion. Man. Also, I don't see the M11 listed here and today is the first day I've been shopping for a player as I just purchased some Ultimate Ears. I'll check out the M11, thanks for the info.

chigonzoI agree, chignozo. It's odd that in 2019 any dap lacks streaming capabilities. For that reason alone, this device is VERY difficult to justify. I guess for those with large hi-res libraries perhaps, but everyone else is looking at other options.

chigonzoAll I’ll say is the added effort to make an android player requires faster processors, more memory, larger screens, and additional software dev resources, the cost of which will get passed down to consumers. The fact that the M11 doesn’t cost a grand, like most other smartphones (because that’s essentially what it is), is kind of a miracle. That is probably why it’s still hard to find for sale in the USA. FiiO can’t keep up with international demand. Well, it’s also brand new, so not gonna be a “drop” for a while either. If streaming is solely how you consume music, just get a portable DAC/amp. That’s what they were made for, and there are a ton of great affordable options. And let’s be honest, the phone in your pocket will likely offer a much better user experience than any niche audiophile company can create on their own. If you’re into both streaming and lossless files, your choices of DAPs in the sub-$1000 category are pretty much the FiiO M11, Cayin N5iis or HiBy R6, afaik. Not a whole lot of choice, because reasons.

chigonzoNo problem! I should say as someone who doesn't use streaming much, I love my M5s. It sounds fantastic. Personally, I'm glad there is still a market for dedicated non-streaming audio players, because the price/performance ratio has only improved in the past few years. Across the board, it used to be that you would need to spend a lot more before the law of diminishing returns would bite back. These days, you can spend a lot less and feel good about the investment because those diminishing returns start at a lower price point.

chigonzoFiiO M6 and M9 (and M7 but wouldn't recommend) also do both streaming and local files and cost less than this.

ToshuYou’re right, I think it can run Tidal. I’d say that’s more of a happy accident tho. Shanling never designed Touch OS to run a bunch of streaming apps on top of its music player. And there is no one who would port those apps over, or provide continual updates for that matter...
BenTeoIt can stream from your phone with Bluetooth, and today’s AAC and LDAC codecs don’t lose any information from Spotify Premium. For offline storage of Spotify, no, it doesn’t do that.

PopZeusYou don't need Android to build a Spotify-compatible player. There are two parts to a Spotify experience... the browsing and the streaming. Spotify has a full REST interface that is in very common use for browsing/selecting, including in their own interfaces. And the streaming (playback) technology is included in practically every home receiver and desktop stereo today, with no O.S. at all. e.g. my Onkyo CR-N575.
TCatRight, but I think I rememeber reading a statement from TIDAL (and I think spotify was on board with this as well) that offline storage and playback was only going to be available on authenticated operating systems. So, even though Astell & Kern worked with TIDAL to get a custom version of the streaming app on many of their DAPs, you couldn’t store songs offline from the streaming service until they introduced the android OS platforms recently.

PopZeusYea but the M11 Pro is already coming out. The M11 may be here on drop soob
dom1234I think the M11 Pro is not a replacement or even a whole “new” model, more like an “M11 special edition.” The M11 is still quite new, but if it did show up on Drop I’d be pretty interested.
