I've been using my M5s since it first came out back in December 2018 as I pre-ordered one from MusicTeck and I absolutely LOVE this DAP. With the FW updates to it since it's inception, it's an even better DAP than it was at launch too! It might not be able to stream via Google Play (I have 33,000+ songs on my Google Play account), but as far as it's sound, it's an absolutely AMAZING and wonderful sounding DAP 💖😎👍🎶🎧
Those AK4493EQ velvet DAC's are NO joke and provide a super detailed and immersive sound to them that I've never had the luxury to hear before!
I listen to my 24/96 live audio recordings with it mainly, along with my Campfire Audio Andromeda and Dorado IEM's through some Linum SuperBax and Bax MMCX Cables, and the sound is actually MIND blowing IMO!!!
Very detailed, but balanced sound, with great lows/mids/highs, and without being boring and analytical and still fun sounding!!! I often listen to it in 3.5mm & 2.5mm modes for HOURS at a time and never get ear fatigued (obviously the IEM's and Cables matter too). Just an absolute pleasure to listen to, and I don't see how ANY other DAP's in this price range, or sub-$1k could sound any better HONESTLY?
FOBeanI completely agree with you I too was one of the early customers on Musicteck and absolutely love this DAP. The M5s replaced and older dual DAC AK120 and I'm opinion this blows it away. Long battery life, simple intuitive UI and of course stellar sound across the entire spectrum. Shanling have continuously released FW updates. I've been using it with the Tin P1s, detail detail detail. And just received my oBravo Cupids - wow take all the detail from the P1 Planar and add the depth of a DD and the M5s feeds them so well.
This DAP is so good, I almost don’t miss not having an active desktop set-up. It’s fine. Too hot and humid to be wearing big cans on my head in a Chicago summer anyways. This player with some choice IEMs makes for an excellent listening session experience. Very smooth but not lacking in detail.
Will this device work as a Roon endpoint over wifi?
I understand it doesn't run the Roon app, so you can't control Roon from it.
But if you're already controlling Roon from something else (iPad, laptop), can Roon stream music to the M5S?
Fwiw I actually really liked this player as a concept. The newer 4493 DACs, balanced, 2-way BT, and 0.3 ohm OI. It's got a great spec list and by accounts it's tuned about as flat as possible.
It was on my short list with the Sony 300ZX. Heck, if I hadn't pulled the trigger on the Q5s last week, I'd have caved and bought this at this Drop price.
Agree with you man. 300 ohm, I'm sure you'll be fine. Heck my M0 can do a decent job with the 58X and HD 600, so I'm sure this will be okay pushing more power, especially with the extra balanced power.
TaylorDOh, I got to borrow an M1! Thought it was pretty cool, almost ideal super-portable DAP/transport if all you wanted was to free up your phone. I think the M0 fills that role even better.

Ended up that those first impressions stuck with me, and I didn’t have much more to add except that I felt it had a musical tone with IEMs and portable headphones, though it would be best to use USB-out to my desktop setup DAC/Amp for full sized headphones (it can make the HD 6XX sound loud enough and pretty good, but it’s missing a little in the dynamics department).
The M5S is supposed to have a more powerful amp and better components, so it should be more detailed as well as musical, and probably have more juice to help with the dynamics. When I tried the M1, the M5 was Shanling’s flagship. I’m not sure if this improved M5S is still the top of their line, but it should be pretty good :)
I think the M11 Pro is not a replacement or even a whole “new” model, more like an “M11 special edition.” The M11 is still quite new, but if it did show up on Drop I’d be pretty interested.
