One look at the SMSL SP400, and it’s clear that this is a headphone amp that’s built with quality and care—and that quality extends far beyond the chassis. Would the Balanced Output power rating be too high for a HD 8XX? (I know I'm a heretic, already have a warm DAC and the SH-9, but would take more power if it's not going to blow out the HD 8XX's)
Hey,
I've had these (and the HD880s) a few times, if you stay in low gain you won't risk damage. It's all about volume wheel control. If you equalize those headphones with a big preamp reduction and listen to pre-volume war recordings you'll be glad to have the power to compensate. They have great sound stage and dynamics, like different drums hitting differently. Micro details are really noticeable compared to most other amps. Take the stickers off the HD8xx for closer tuning to the HD800s, alcohol wipes help.
It can use the RCA or XLR, but performs best (like many SMSL amps) with a 5 volt DAC. I use an SMSL SU-8s which is a standard 4 volt, but sounds flawless with everything. Even an inexpensive Topping D10b or SMSL M300SE will be good and save a lot of money.
