After the massive success of The Key Macropad, we are excited to announce V2! If you are looking for more info on V1, check out this overview from last time.
Not only is The Key back, it's also improved based on customer feedback. The Key V2 features an acrylic case to show off the RGB LEDs and a hot-swap PCB for easier customization.
If the last run of The Key is any indication, you'll want to act fast on this one - quantities are limited to 4,900 this time around.
Many users have asked for improved default configuration files.
Here are two config files which offer a default keymap as follows. "_0" keys are the base layer, while "_1" keys are on alternate/function Layer 1.
Left_0: fn/Layer Key (while pressed, enables Middle_1 and Right_1 when Middle and Right keys are pressed)
Middle_0: Cmd+C (Mac), Ctrl+C (Win)
Right_0: Cmd+V (Mac), Ctrl+C (Win)
Left_1: <key does not exist on Layer 1>
Middle_1: RGB_TOG (toggles RGB on/off)
Right_1: RGB_MOD (cycles through RGB modes)
These are the two files, available for both Mac and Windows:
https://docs.drop.com/TheKeyV2MacroLightingMAC.hex https://docs.drop.com/TheKeyV2MacroLightingPC.hexThe flashing process will be the same as detailed in the existing documentation for The Key V1 ("Uploading the New Custom Configuration onto The Key" section).
Note that the provided configuration files here are '.hex' files. These are ready to flash to the controller, pre-compiled. You can alternatively follow the link above for configuring The Key V1, upload the '.json' file found there, and modify it to your liking if you want a more custom configuration. The files and instructions detailed in this post are intended to get people to a more desirable "baseline" configuration that many users desired out-of-the-box.
Please feel free to post here with any questions and I will do my best to assist with specific situations.
@jason.wihardja could you please share the JSON file, so I could extend on your work? I want to have mac and PC makros on different layers in the same firmware, so I would be able to swap the key between mac and PC without flashing the firmware inbetween.
I want to swap the Key V2 between a mac and Windows PC. Is it possible to configure the makro Cmd+C ( for Mac), and Ctrl+C ( for Windows) on the same key without using layers?
i'm so glad i found this, i needed a few extra dollars to get free shipping and this was the perfect item to complete my order. I always wanted something like this
Can this macro pad be used for sign on windows? For example, send ctrl-alt-del, and then send 4 digit or 6 digit pin code, so that user can login with windows hello.
ciberFully possible, but a very bad idea.
Consider this situation: someone comes up to you while you work on your computer. They see your fancy new macropad and wonder what it does. They press a key - woops, there's your password in plain text.
Or, an even worse situation - someone steals your tiny pocketable macropad. Now they have your password (or even worse, passwords).
TL;DR: Never ever save passwords in macros.
I managed to configure everything with through VIAL with the excellent explanations provided below, but I plugged it in my work laptop the next day, and it completely reset to red LEDs and "1-2-3" under the three buttons? I assumed flashing in Toolbox and then adding my own flavour in VIAL would be enough for it to have all that stuff baked in when plugging into a different device? I'm an absolute noob but I'm not afraid to just stand up and ask stupid questions. Please halp.
BanksIt can. But you have to code your own firmware. If you know some of the QMK coding, you can utilize the lighting layers feature to enable such indicator
