I got mine on the last drop. Writes nicely. Does anyone else have an issue with it drying out fast? If I don't is it over the weekend when I get back to work on Monday, it doesn't want to write. Using diamine Matador ink.
@SteveF8528 @j-e-g I'm the one with the cracked cap j-e-g. And yes, that's how it cracked. If you look inside the cap, you see these 'ribs'. They provide friction to keep the cap in place. The snap-on effect comes courtesy of the white cylinder in the top end of the cap, but it does not provide much grip; it only serves to isolate the nib. The ribs inside the cap, however, clearly differ from pen to pen. The caps which do not rotate easily have thicker ribs. You can even see their rub marks on the grip section. I guess one could sand them down if it's too much of an issue.

TherocAhh - my mistake, I thought Steve had the cracked cap... I prefer the nice snap and click of the cap. I dunno, makes me think the cap is on securely. While it may make no difference in terms of the nib drying out, I feel like the snug fit (pen not turning when capped) that too, makes me feel the nib/ink is sealed from the room air. Then again, I have no had a problem with mine drying out. After 2 weeks of being away, they started right up.... so I'll be happy with that - Squeaky threads and all :)

OMG !!! I am so happy :) Was quick to join the drop and I think I accidently ordered 2 of the same pens... @Liz can you please check to see if I did order 2 of the "orange .7 pens. I can either cancel one or can I just select a different color and nib size ? Hope you can help me with this @Liz - Thank You So... Funny thing... this afternoon I saw a message in my email from @Theroc and I thought I'd take a photo... Serendipity ! I LOVE the Super5 pens and the nibs are great fun.. the stub, by nature gives a little flair to your natural writing, but the steel nibs do offer some line variation with a little pressure on the down strokes. My writing isn't quite the best to show off the nib - They are great for print/cursive, art work, or doodling. Hope it helps.

Perhaps your writing is ordinary, but as a lefty with little real instruction or practice, mine is decidedly below that. I think yours is quite a high bar to start with. I do very much enjoy the tactile sensations of writing with a fountain pen, and how they help give even sub-par penmanship a little panache.
Teaching cursive to students is a marvelous idea (though my cursive is as yet atrocious). I've been looking for some volunteer work; perhaps I'll start there. Thanks for the advice.

writerstephenWell, even better ! Can't tell you how many times teachers wanted help with left dominant kids ! There are fewer folks available to teach writing, cutting and other hand skills to "lefties" My father was a lefty and his writing was really nice... But, he was also very artistic as well. My only claim to near talent is that I am able to write & print R and L handed, upside down, and backward. Not that they are skills one frequently needs on an average day. The joys of trying to understand visual-perceptual and motor skills... trying to "see" what it is that a student sees as they master each step.. You already have the skills to work with L dominant kids :)

I don't see the point in having loads of cheap pens with the same or similar nibs. A cheap .5mm stub is something I can get excited about though. Thanks for this one Massdrop.

jlambIs it just a stub, or does it have flex?

kawarazuHi @kawarazu,
The nib is on the stiffer side, but has the same amount of flex you would expect in a lot of other fountain pens when you press a little harder than normal to spread the tines. Definitely not flexy enough to be considered a flex nib though, or get much line variation. Hope this helps!
Now that's what I call a proper drop. Thanks @Liz.

Theroc@Liz , in all seriousness - On the heels of some bad news, tonight was the perfect night to be distracted with the silliness of getting something as simple as a fountain pen. A reminder that no matter what we do - it is valued by others. Thanks -

Since I don't see it mentioned anywhere: Does this drop include a converter, or would I need to purchase one separately?

Appreciate the clarification, thank you!
Thanks for the heads-up. I added two. One can never have too many converters.

Are the "calligraphy" nibs stubs or italics? It doesn't look like they're tipped, but people in the comments are describing them as stubs.
debrowneI guess you could call them italics. They are certainly not ball-shaped like conventional nibs, but they are not straight stubs either. They have rounded edges. Basically they write like conventional nibs but with beautiful line variation. Keep in mind, however, that for the 0.5 nib the variation is very understated.

After a month with this pen, I have to amend my previously tepid review, and raise the temp a bit. This is a really solid daily user - the nib is smooth, there is "some" line variation - I would prefer more - and it is just the right level of wetness. I have had zero trouble with hard starts or railroading. This is the perfect mix of fountain pen feel with ball point pen reliability. Sadly, I haven't been able to find the pen available anywhere else in the US - it was on Goulet and Amazon at one point, but no longer. It *is* available at papierlabor.de, but the shipping costs to the US are outlandish - almost $40 - more than the cost of one pen by a significant amount.

They did, and I am very pleased overall. Still not thrilled with the line variation, but other than that these pens are great. The .7 is slightly wider than the .5 - it's clear with a side by side comparison but not noticeable otherwise. These pens are now my go to recommendation for new users, replacing the Lamy Safari and Pilot Metropilitan as inexpensive fountain pens.
Availability is the biggest barrier to entry here.

Gort5000Agreed, I would have no reservations about recommending these for starter pens. It is difficult to now right off which nib size I am using... With luck, I'll be able to remember which color pen has which nib size - No fault of the nib, just a memory lapse ;) I have to say after many years of writing with fountain pens and many with stub, calligraphy and italic nibs.... I'm not quite sure I have figured out the perfect grip/position is best for which pen or nib. I suppose that's the challenge of it all.
