As much as I love the biweekly Zippo-filling ritual, and the smell and residue of fluid & soot, it's awesome to be able to pick up a clean, low-maintenance zippo with a butane insert for EDC - Light cigars in an instant, even if only once a month. And the next month. And the next month; without having to refill due to evaporation.
Always wanted a Zippo and wanted that color. When I got it, my dad traded me one in bronze because he wanted it. He then proceeded to affix an Air Force badge emblem on it because he always wanted a Zippo with one. Guess who still wants a Matte Blue Zippo?
Classic design. Original design requires a bit of maintenance, but nothing more than refilling right before a hike (I use it mainly for camping). Other option is to get a butane insert to replace the original hardware
It is easy to forget that real classic items do not work out-of-the-box. You need to learn their use and maintenance if you are unfamiliar with them. Same way, do not expect the same carefree user attitude from a Zippo lighter than from a disposable gas lighter. What you need to learn:
how to take it apart and put it back together (not a hard thing, luckily)
first time check if the filling material and the wick in the fuel chamber are properly arranged (oftentimes not when you receive it): luckily, there are good YouTube videos to help you out.
learn how not to overfill the fuel container, which is an easy mistake to make.
learn to live together with the fuel fumes that come with these lighters. (not an unpleasant smell)
If you get over the above, and learn how to live with this peak of craftsmanship, you will have a really nice accessory item that really belongs to you.
I loved using this lighter, with its bright matte finish and the lid clicking into place like my grandfather’s did long ago. And the three months later the spring that manages the lid broke. The lid now flops about uselessly so I no longer use it. Pretty disappointing.
Zippo ... either you love ‘em or hate ‘em. I love them for their virtues, which are many, and forget the rest. Mine arrived in perfect, new condition. I swapped out the fill for pure cotton and re-packed the wick as I usually do, popped in a few extra flints and a wick, and was alight in minutes.
Good stuff.
