What is SpaceFN and why you should give it a try
The SpaceFN concept - setting up your space key as a layer switch when held - is probably one of the most useful tweaks in the keyboard hobby. Let me explain how it works. My SpaceFN article on kbd.news made some rounds recently - quite surprisingly given the age of this concept. This piece you're reading is a condensed version of the full post. If you're left with unanswered questions, you'll most likely find the info you're looking for in the original write-up. On my imaginary top list of the most useful keyboard features, tweaks and hacks, SpaceFN would deserve a podium finish for sure. But what makes it so special? In short: SpaceFN is easy to implement, easy to learn, costs nothing, can be used with any keyboard, and can improve your productivity instantly. - all the above. Move correct files into one folder.
- In files, click on files, hover over powershied, choose run as administrator. It is just easier to get to the correct files this way vs. explaining how to do it in powershield. Sometimes not running as an administrator is an issue on some people's machines for some reason, or so I have read.
- type without [brackets] or cut and paste this, just insert your .bin files correct name.
- [ . \mdloader_windows.exe --first -- download .\yourfilename.bin --restart] (you can type some of the file name like so, .\yourfilen and hit enter or up and it'll fill the rest in as long as you only have .bin file with that name. Otherwise, triple check that's the right one. There is also an issue with the files wanting to try to be written as .bin.bin so make sure to remove the second .bin if this happens.
- Hit Enter. You'll get a message saying you have 60 second to reset. Hold FN+B for 3-5 seconds and release. Upon release your keyboard will power off and back on. If it doesn't power back on after 60 seconds, unplug and replug. It should be fine. Mine has been so far at least the time that happened.
If you have an older low profile alt or ctrl, if may require a 2nd keyboard. You'll hit enter on the second and use safety pin to reset the board on the bottom. You should be good to go. Hope this helps.
