In 2017, we embarked on an ambitious new project: to make a brand new set of high precision doubleshot keycap molds with Matt3o's popular MT3 profile. A project that was supposed to be completed in 10 months ended up taking over 2 years. More than a thousand groupbuy participants shifted from eager anticipation, to massive frustration, and finally elation when they received their keycaps. Since then, we’ve made and shipped over 50,000 keycap sets using our doubleshot MT3 toolset and it remains our highest average-rated keycap profile that we’ve ever sold.
We learned a crucial lesson from this experience: making high quality doubleshot keycap tools (molds) is extremely difficult and time-consuming. So, when we began a new project to make a whole new set of tools for a new profile, we decided to do it behind closed doors to spare community members from the roller coaster of unexpected delays.
We kicked the project off in early 2020 with some ambitious goals:
Create a cylindrical profile keycap to widen our keycap offerings
Meet or exceed the industry-leading legend tolerances of MT3 keycaps
Make premium weighted keycaps to ensure durability, longevity, and desirable acoustics
Provide a finished product that is free from exterior blemishes and imperfections
Apply meticulous design to every single keycap
Accommodate proprietary blends of high-quality resins
Be able to produce the keycaps efficiently at scale
Offer Mac system compatibility
We’re now weeks away from shipping our first production keycaps and we’re so excited to tell you all about them. Say hello to Drop DCX.

Stay tuned for updates as we reveal the different characteristics and aspects of this groundbreaking product.
(edit: profile name change, image update)
Okay so this is basically the MT2 renamed to DCX to rectify the wrong attribution right?
Would be good to also change the picture (which still shows MT2) to avoid confusion.
involuntarysoulBased on the purported similarity to cherry profile, it is likely that there will be interference. Can't say for sure though. One solution to north facing interference I have seen in the community is long pole switches, but results may vary.
suitspringQ1Well if it's only similar, then there may not be any problems (see SP's DCS profile). If it's 1:1 Cherry profile, then there will most likely be interference, but using washers or even long pole switches like you said should remedy the problem.
Honestly, I'm down, provided they are quality and can compete with GMK on price. I own enough sets to not bother buying yet another of an existing colorway on a different profile. We have been missing that middle ground to pricing/quality between GMK and the $25-40 sets on Amazon (which can be decent at times, but lacking good colors).
CyphreThat middle ground between GMK and cheap sets that you are looking for is Domikey's Cherry profile. They are really good quality, granted I have never tried my hands on a GMK set.
In a nutshell, he seemed upset that the original name was a riff off the name of the series he designed... which is a riff off his moniker... and yet he had nothing to do with the design... and it was a design style that he doesn't seem to want to be affiliated with. I get it, but I don't think there was malice, so maybe everyone let it go? It seems they even changed the name per his request. I'm guessing they thought he'd feel honored?
Personally, I felt the name thing was just bad marketing. It's nothing *at all* like the MT3, so why make it seem like a mid-height MT3? Also personally, I really dislike Cherry-like profile and anyone offering yet another one of those can keep it. If they had an interesting profile variant I'd probably consider getting it, but for me, this one is boring and generic. My opinion, they need an insanely tall profile like those old keypunch machines with the nearly round keys. Oh, and one of the keys should have the old "cent" symbol! That would be fun. Call them the "NU4". Get it? Plus one taller than MT3, so all the characters advance... and yeah... new.
But nobody's asking me. ;-D
I think it is hilarious that there is such a disparity between the folks who comment on Drop stuff and the people who buy Drop stuff. Because the comments are full of hate, while Drop's bank accounts are full of money, evidently. Haters gonna hate, I guess :-)
MT2 doesn't look like it'll be for me, but I might buy a set if there is a cool colorway I like, just because it is in stock and isn't GMK. That's another thing...the people who love-love-love GMK should be rooting strongly for Drop. If these sets sell well, that's one more big reason for GMK to get the lead out and start shipping some fucking product.
Totally agree. MT3 sets have so many kitting issues and are so underwhelming and unreadable that Drop has been able to use those profits to invest in new tooling for a completely new keycap offering that will probably also suck and be unreadable and underwhelming. I don't know why ppl keep buying and buying and buying all this crap that Drop seems so keen to keep in stock.
"They just need to not be slow." Yeah, okay bud, that's super easy to do. Go tell the car manufacturers to stop being slow and "screwing over" the auto industry; go tell politicians to stop be slow, I'm sure that'll work!
This is incredible news and I know the term is throw around carelessly by paid social influencers in custom keyboards but this is actually game changing. A product at parity with GMK is going to make *serious* money.
afroemoIndeed. I'm a huge fan of MT3, and after using them in my daily drivers for a year or so I can confirm the quality is top-notch. Drop offering a cylindrical style dual-shot cap as a normally-stocked item will be a huge boost to the community, especially with the massive backlog at GMK right now.
afroemoPossibly, but this is all but guaranteed to be a cheap Chinese attempt at Cherry profile with horrible legends, bad compatibility, and an attempt to monopolize on the wait times of actual quality production. We shall see, but my guess is overpriced crap.
It’s all going to boil down to to what keebs can be covered by a basic set. Will Drop be greedy and separate alphas and mods and spacebars and numpads and 40’s? Or will they do a JTK trend and offer all-in-one for a better than GMK price with as good as quality? The ball is in your court, Drop. Please,
impress me.
hiddensongSeparating kits isn’t a greed thing, it’s how molds are made. The caps are molded in clusters. In keysets with multiple alpha options (different colours or legend options) it’s preferable since you can pick out your own config. Granted having more popular combos as a preconfigured kit would be nice, especially for those large SA kits.
A side profile diagram to compare MT2 to Cherry and OEM profile would be quite useful.
A diagram between these 3 overlapped (i.e. https://www.keycaps.info/ ; click on Stack mode) would be rather helpful.
Lesser-known manufacturers like Melgeek (MG and MDA), and Cannonkeys (CXA) have managed to do so when introducing their profiles
Seems like they've finally added some photographic profile comparisons to GMK: https://drop.com/talk/108263/dcx-live-q-a/2885459
As everyone suspected, it's much like a Cherry Profile, with just some subtle differences (which probably won't change the overall typing experience overall that much). As I mentioned before, many people probably won't mind that.
bobaloverThanks for the link, and yes, it looks like a slightly more scoopy version of cherry(though much less than I was expecting). Still cherry profile though.
