Announcement - Changes to Hidden Posts

more_vert
Hey everyone, we are making some changes behind the scenes that I wanted to share with you all so you aren't caught off guard if you notice anything different. As you may be aware, we have a few different Moderation tools available to us to assist with moderation on the site. In an effort to increase transparency and minimize what could be perceived as egregious moderation, we will be changing the behavior of Hidden Posts, along with some accompanying changes to moderation procedures.  Currently, a moderator can choose to hide an offending post, which effectively removes the content of the post/comment while leaving behind a message that the post was hidden. This behavior was selected in order to leave a public record of the removal. However, one concern with this methodology is that the user (and general public) has no feedback as to why the post was removed, nor any recourse to engage in a discussion regarding the decision.  Going forward, there will be two potential paths that an offending post may take - Editing or Hiding.  The vast majority of moderation actions which would have previously hidden a post will now result in editing the post instead. Any offending text will be removed, along with a note from a moderator explaining why the text was removed. This has an added benefit of allowing any non-offending text to remain alongside the mod edit. The original poster of the comment will also be able to respond to their now-edited post asking for clarification in the event of a miscommunication or misunderstanding (please remember to tag the moderator to alert them to your response).  Hiding posts will now be performed only in extreme circumstances (primarily spam, potentially others as they may pop up). Hidden posts will be entirely hidden to non-moderator users, effectively soft-deleting them from the discussion. Again, this will only be done in very extreme circumstances, if at all.  Please note: One side effect of this change is that all previously "Hidden" posts (currently visible to the public) will take on the new Hidden Post behavior detailed above, wherein they will be publicly hidden and only visible to moderators. If you come across such a change and are wondering why the post is now gone, this is what happened to it.
