Drop killed Massdrop’s once-exciting writing community long before the sunset. The writing community used to be really well curated. I’m a pen collector and I found a lot of pens on Massdrop that I wouldn’t have known about otherwise. They offered a variety of pens and ink at really good prices, making it worthwhile to wait a month or more for delivery. I bought a lot of pens and ink from Massdrop. But in recent months they’ve just been recirculating the same drops, doing fewer and fewer writing drops, and the prices haven’t been any better than traditional sellers who ship immediately. The recirculated drops seem to have been designed to clear out inventory (I recognize the irony) rather than generate enthusiasm. I bought things from other communities - gaming, cooking, edc, outdoors, etc... But I found those products on Massdrop because the writing community brought me to the site. The EDC community used to be well curated, too. They used to have a good variety of products with enough cool surprises and interesting ideas to keep me engaged and ordering. That has changed. I used to look forward to the daily email with a variety of drops from diverse communities because there would always be some really interesting product that I never would have known about. That’s a pretty amazing feat for a store to pull off in our spam-saturated inboxes. Now it seems they just sell knives and headphones. There may be some really neat knives and headphones on the site. But it’s just not interesting or engaging to get a list of drops that’s 90% headphones and knives. Massdrop had a great thing going. Now they’ve taken it a different direction. Best of luck. But I’m purchasing very rarely now, whereas before it seems like I’d joined 2 or 3 drops at any given time.
