Get a Koss Porta Pro, and choose between Schiit Fulla 3 and iFi Zen DAC. Those would get you an idea of what to expect. If you can put more money down, then get a HD 58X.

Would you mind me asking what you plan to use them for? If it’s just for general listening, but wanting to experience more dynamic range, I’d have certain recommendations for that. If it’s for the purpose of recording, music, and or audio production I’ll likely recommend something completely different. Or if you’re thinking of getting into DJing, while closely related to studio and production headphones and some even crossover, I would still have specific picks for that as well. If you have any other questions, too, don’t hesitate to ask and I’ll try to help.

SynecdocheIm going to be using them to exclusively listen to music. I want to have something I can listen to at home and maybe something for outside.

The HD58X coupled with the O2/SDAC, some nice files of your favs in 24/96, and a decent USB cable. This will properly represent today’s HiFi, and not become hundreds of dollars in audio hardware detritus, left behind from the “journey”.

I'm gonna be straight up with you, get a Koss Porta Pro, Koss KPH30is, or the Monoprice Modern Retros and change the stock pads for Brainwavz XL pads. I bought 8 expensive headphones that get beat out by these three. The only headphones that I own that flat out beat them are my Monolith M1060s, maybe my Sennheiser HD6XXs, maybe my Meze 99 Noirs, and maybe my 1more triple drivers. I would get those cheap ones I mentioned first and then see if you want more. I have a Toppings MX3 DAC/AMP that I use for my speakers, Audio Technica turntable and sometimes headphones. I use a Creative Soundblaster G6 as my headphone DAC/AMP at the moment. I have the Drop THX AAA 789 headphone amp ordered but hasn't arrived yet which I will pair with my Toppings E30 DAC. The Creative Soundblaster G6 with my Monolith M1060 is what I mostly use for music pleasure at the moment. I am also in the middle of modifying a stock pair of Fostex T50RP mk2s. I'm about $250 deep into these headphones and the first three headphones I mentioned flat out sound more pleasing to me. The Fostex have muddy bass which is a real let down. If I was to look for my next headphone purchase for musical enjoyment, I think I'm gonna be going for the Hifiman Sundaras or the Monolith M1570s. My next Bluetooth upgrade will either be the Audiotechnica ATH-M50XBT or just straight to the Drop + THX Pandas. Hope this helps in some way.

tcurtis6984Thanks for all the advice. I had no idea you could get good sound at such a low price! I always thought it required hundreds of dollars to even get into. I like the soundblasterx g6 you sent but man those headphones look like something i used in the third grade computer lab. But if its really that good ill get a couple different ones and see where to go from there.
