So I'm still pretty new to stuff like this. But I was recently thinking about getting a set of speakers and an amp for it. I wanted to get the Sennheiser HD 6xx and I was just curious what type of amp and speakers anyone could recommend. My budget is probably around 700 for all of that. I don't need anything too fancy but any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Well, for speakers I'd really need to know what speakers you're running. Although let me tell you that I haven't heard a speaker amp under $700 that I thought was worth keeping around (Schiit Vidar). Thus, it's hard for me to answer your question since the cheapest amp I'd reasonably recommend takes up the entirety of your budget.
For the Sennheiser HD6XX, if you're only planning on sticking to HD 6XX or similar dynamic headphones then your amp options are (no particular order):
Schiit Valhalla 2
EC ZDT Jr
Shortest Way SW51+
Bachelor
Schiit Asgard 3
In terms of DACs, I'm a sucker for the Schiit DACs. Just choose one that fits your budget. Another good option is iFi; the Zen DAC is actually pretty good for what it is (I really like the Zen Signature, but I don't think that's available anymore). R.E. Topping; I haven't heard one that I either thought was really poor value or belonged in the garbage can.
I think the lack of replies is due to lack of information. With HD 6xx you need a good amp and DAC. For that matter you should look at the best amp/DAC and headphones. The HD 6xx is a great start. Now when you talk speakers you add in another world of complexity.
A full bit of advise and recommendations will take time. I will also need information from you.
Are you looking for separate components, such as a DAC, Preamp and power amp, or one unit with it all. I lean in that direction as full units well often have a weaknesses. Even with speakers and separates you can get in under your 700 dollar budget.
Get back to me if you have not decided on something already.
