I plan to get the Loki as it can work with all my sources rather than just what I’ve got on my laptop. Of course, its affordability is a big factor—I wouldn’t get it if were twice or more expensive.

Not on Massdrop, but there's the analog Schiit Loki for $150 that works well with 4 bands (set at 20Hz, 400Hz, 2kHz, and 8kHz) and the RME ADI-2 DAC (WAY more expensive than the Loki @ $1k...) that has 5 band digital fully adjustable/customizeable PEQ (can even EQ L and R channels separately). Both are stand alone operational, built into the unit with no computer connection required for anything.
Well anymore software EQ is kind of a big player. I don't EQ often but when I do it's with jRiver Media Center's parametric filters. Most graphic eq's are generally of poor quality and physical parametric EQ's are getting harder to find. Personally I would recommend the miniDSP line of devices if you want to play with an EQ that doesn't have to be hooked up to a PC all the time. Without PC connection it is not possible to change the settings on the fly so that may not fit your needs.
