Amp's always help and will make a difference, it's not necessary to listen to them but if you want better than mediocre volume or proper current delivery a proper amp is the only way to go.

QwervyI wanted to add, incase anyone in the future was curious, the amp that I currently own was more than capable of driving the headphones, as well as preventing bad audio when turned close to maximum volume. Using regular output the headphones had a near blown-out quality, but plugged into an amp they became so much more clear.

BowiebutBlondeIn general these headphones should be definitely amped. I got my mom a pair for her e-piano and straight from the piano output they were way too quiet. They also don't work very well with mobile phones.
