Ha--I caught the tail-end of that craze but remember it well! I grew up in the suburbs of LA so decent wooden crates were tough for a kid to come by. Closest we had were the occasional fruit or vegetable crate but those were pretty flimsy--noting like the kind you saw in New York for seltzer bottles (you could make a tank out of those). I learned to roller skate on those damn metal skates that slid on a track to adjust to various shoe sizes. There was torturous metal heal cup in the back with a leather strap and buckle to hold you foot in place. Up front were the notoriously ever-loosening clamps that supposedly gripped the sole of your shoe to the forward extension of the skate. I say notorious because at any moment, you could experience a catastrophic failure where the clamp would detach from you toe and send that sharp metal heel cup flying into your Achilles tendon with the force of a chain saw. To prevent that horror, every kid wore a Skate Key around their neck on a leather string and used it religiously to tighten those toe clamps when ever he stopped. The other must have accessory was a small can of 3-In-One Oil to keep those cheap ballbearings spinning freely (and wash out the days accumulation of dust and mud). Had a lot of fun with those cheap skates but they didn't compare to the rubber wheels and smooth wood floors you'd find a real Roller-Rink! So when the Scooter fad came to town, nobody felt too bad about splitting them apart and pounding that heel cup flat so we could nail them to the closest 2 x 4 would steal! When the crate thing didn't work out, and with the rise of Surfing in California, we were quick to dump the crates to start "Hang'n Five" down the block. I had two advantages back then: I lived on a street with a nice, block-long incline, and my father had a wood shop in the garage. It wasn't long before I dumped the 2 x 4s for a hand made ash and walnut, competition striped, laminated skateboard--with real rubber wheels! I believe those wheels were kind of pink and made by Hobie. One thing for sure--they were fast! And I have the scars to prove it. Now back to New York--as a kid, we'd spend two weeks each summer visiting my paternal grandmother who lived on Cruger Avenue (between Burke Ave and Adee Ave) in East Bronx, so I was not unfamiliar with Egg Creams, Bagel factories, cute Italian girls named Angela, and some street games. I confess I wasn't much with a stick, and never did get to second base with Angela, I was pretty good at Stoop ball! As a matter of fact, I still have a pink Spalding. But I'd trade it for just one night with Angela! Hmm, maybe not--she's probably someone's grandmother by now!

I had a cheap pocket watch as a kid too--not a fancy Westclock Scotty, but a pretty good Ingram Biltmore (I believe they were known a Dollar-Watches back then). Still have it too; that's it on the top row:

So my friend, even though we grew up on different coasts, it would seem we still grew up with many things in common! Actually, it seems we've always have had a lot in common--it's always been fun discussing things with you here. However, if you ever ended up dating a girl from the Bronx named Angela, I DON'T WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT! By the way, I never played Skelzie, (in CA we played Four-Square) but I did fine a website that explains the game for anyone who'd like to know more about it: https://skelzie.com/ PS: Good post by the way!

RayFI had a feeling you would know what I was talking about great response it’s good to know there’s still someone around that can relate and can remember the experience of the good old days and those skates you’ll never be able to appreciate them unless you actually skated with them and if you did you definitely had some scraped up hands and knees
