AyowynGenerally speaking the TL;DR is that Razer charge an unreasonable margin for quite low quality boards.
The fact that they resorted to 'making their own switches' - or otherwise speaking, use cheap Chinese Kailh switches in order to compete with lower cost boards even though they don't offer anything spectacular over said lower cost boards with original cherry MX switches - should be indicative of the kind of market they cater to. Their demand comes from customers who do very little research and are taken aback by Razer's fancy packaging.
That said, a small comparison should be more than enough to prove my point. On Amazon, they cost around $134 (the ultimate 2014 version) last time I checked and it had this description: "Mechanical key architecture with distinct tactile feel and faster response" That's the kind of sentence they put for products that don't have Cherry MX switches, yet it still cost that much - just as a side comparison, Thermaltake offer a standard board with the same switches and even backlighting but it costs $70 and has a 5 year warranty. This is all in comparison to the Corsair K70 which has a fully backlit board with dedicated media keys (albeit no macro keys) with original cherry switches and an aluminum chassis for $4 less.
It's not 'inferior' per say, it's just far from the best option.
